What does a 1st level magic user wear?

Unread post by bathawk »

Hey all, you may have seen lately in my "Rifts for kids" thread that I'm going to be introducing my girlfriends 9 year old to Rifts, wth mom along for the ride. They're playing a wolfen Elemental Fusionist and a human air warlock.

But what do they wear for armor? They have my core book right now, but from what I understand wearing artiifial armor like plastic man or bushman interferes with spellcasting right?
And not quite sure what the guidelines are on technowizard armor. the siege on Tolkeen series indicated that getting TW armore with one or two spells built in wasn't that hard. but not sure what the guidelines on that are (cost, availability ect;)

SO how does a magic user at 1st level protect themselves before they know armor of ithan or something similar?

Generally by having a 'front line' escort of some kind. Very rarely should mages of any power be traveling unescorted specifically for the concern you presented here. That said, you might check the Ley Line Walker for an acceptable armor option.

It's simple for me: I change the rules.

Mages cannot wear powered armor. They can wear body armor.

There's a reason...and a very good one...that I have certain people in this forum blocked both here and on Facebook.

I can see an illustration of that nearly every time I come here.

Wow, ok my thoughts on this.

A good option for the Wolfen is Dog Boy Armor, probablly heavy since Wolfen tend to be bigger then your average dog boy. Pluss strictly going by the new rules it isn't environmental.

Another option is mentioned by other people, Fury Beetle Armor, the various mdc leather armors made from beasts. If your looking for a good relativly light leather armor for a mage look up the Dragonhide armor in Juicer uprisings. It is made from mdc leathers and offers good protection.

The ley line walkers must have MDC medical bandages since the pictures all show them wrapped up like mummies. Might make for nice artwork but in all honesty I loved when Rifts first came out and mages were like anyone else. They threw on the same environmental armors as anyone else since they are just as vulnerable to radiation, Heat, Cold, poisoness gas etc. This new direction of making mage's more D&D like doesnt sit well with me and it detracts from the rifts setting as it was originally introduced.

If I want mages in robes with staffs I will stick to fantasy, but this is Rifts Earth. Give me a mage in deadboy armor with a rifle at his side anyday.

If you think about it, the Coalition could have just gassed Tolkeen saved millions and picked up the peices no muss no fuss. Why use firepower when your opponents are 50-70% vulnerable to good old nerve gas etc.

Still some sources for mage armor that works under the new rules:
TW armor - specifically the kind worn as opposed to TW PA's which mages can now not use.

The Rifts Ultimate Edition has stats as stated under the Ley Line Walker for armor for mages.

Juicer Uprsings has that Dragonhide armor.

New West and the Dinosaur Swamp books have options for non environmental armors.

Dog Pack Armor from all pictures looks open enough to easily be used by mages.

Also see Mystic Knights from Federation of Magic and Madhaven. They have armor that is non environmental and mage friendly.

Also depending on availibility Dweomer has different armors for the various Magus classes all of which look pretty cool if a bit alien.

Pluss anything of your own creation, I could easily see someone preserving Xiticix exoskeletons as an armor choice.

Hope some of these help.

I agree completely. If I ever get to play Rifts again I plan on making a case for going back to that.

My thoughts exactly :ok:

...though I take it a bit further - they cannot wear EBA either, but there's plenty of adequate non-EBA suits out there on the market.

I believe Arzno also has some armor specific for mages (made of Wood?)

sure, but only kings and people with massive uranium fields can afford it.

The other TW armours (of which a high proportion of Arzno citizens own) are also suitable for mages - they're not quite so likely to require a lottery win to finance.
