Yes they are. Though I live in SC there aren't many gamers to begin with. I've had a few females in my games, but I think the record is three consecutive games before they found something better to do.

why do people keep making that mistake?

My guess is, he seems to always pick female avatars. Since most people pick an avatar that matches their gender, that association is fairly strong in many people's minds.
