Questions about rifts

Unread post by firefrog600 »

I was wondering what are all the examples of a being, item, spell, ability, etc etc that can permanently shut a rift down, destroy a ley line, close off a specific dimension from travelling through a rift, prevent travel through a dimensional nexus, and so on? Things that essentially prevent something from going through certain rifts any examples are welcomed.

All rifts are permanently closed when they are closed. Nothing need be done to keep it closed, so I'm not sure the question.

There exists nothing that can permanently destroy a ley line. They can be temporarily shut down or redirected, but never destroyed. That's like asking how to permanently destroy an ocean current or jet stream. They're phenomena of the natural flow of magic energy, not an object. You can redirect them or dam them, but never destroy them.

Rift can be permanently closed but there's also spells and OCC's which can open new ones. Even on the site of an old one.

OH! Sorry. Just realized that doesn't answer most of your questions. the truth is there's tons of rules and information on rifts scattered around the books and I don't feel like skimming all of them just to tell you ALL of the spells and effects that can open and close rifts. I'll go with the Ultimate Edition so you can get a start.

In RUE on page 191 thru 196 they talk about natural rifts.
The ley line walker on page 115 has some basic knowledge of rifts.
The Shifter starting on page 120 has a lot more knowledge of rifts including the ability to communicate thru them and sense them, as well as more starting spells which are helpful.
The spells for dealing directly with Rifts are on page 222, 224, 225.

Now, there more than just the RUE but I don't have the energy to go looking. If anyone else wants to pick one book and tell us what rules there are for rifts, please post them here. We'd all appreciate it.

I think part of the confusing part is we have spells like "Re-Open Gateway" which imply a rift is closed, but the example we're given is a Permanent Rift that never closes (St Louis Gateway) so the spell functions more like "redirect an already-redirected gateway back to the last place it used to point" in spite of the name.

I wrongly thought there was some kinda nazca ritual for destroying it but page 37 of SA2 only has making/extending it.

It does beg the question though what happens when a permanent spell to create a ley line encounters something like an anti-magic cloud - might these artificial leylines sometimes temporarily vanish as compared to natural ones not created by a spell?

Nothing happens because they're not artificial. Nothing says they are. It creates a real ley line.

Better way to think about it is what happens to a house fire you started with a fire bolt spell on the drapes.

The magic has come and gone. Magic started the fire but it's now a purely natural phenomenon. Anti magic cloud does nothing.

Same with any permanent creation spell. The ley line was created by magic but is now a natural feature of the geography. Anti magic cloud does nothing.

Natural consequences of magic have to be permanent. Otherwise anti magic cloud would ressurect anyone killed by magic.

i guess part of the issue is how these spells call themselves 'permanent' but there are some permanent spell effects which can be removed and others which can't and some grey areas too

It's a pretty simple question: Does the spell create a magical effect with an indefinite duration, or use a temporary magical effect to create a permanent change in the nature of someone or something?

Take the Eternal Flame spell for example. It creates a permanent magical flame. This can be doused with Anti-Magic Cloud because the fire is magical not natural.

Whereas if you use Ignite Fire to start a housefire, sorry, the house is burning down for natural reasons.

Note: truly Permanent, Magical Effects, are generally only suppressed by Anti-Magic Cloud. Take something like a Permanency ward. It creates a permanent effect with the linked ward phrase. In this case the interaction with anti-magic cloud is specific: Anti-Magic cloud will suppress the ward for the duration so that it has no effect, but the effect it will return when the cloud is gone.

yeah permanency is so powerful the AMC doesn't really fully supress it in a cancelly way like most spells but makes it go to sleep like a mystic energy drain or something but more absolute
