Will the license for Robotech ever be reacquired?

Unread post by Treefrog »

After reading the opening statement by Mr. Siembieda in Rifter #18 (page 7), I was wodering:

Are there talks between PB and Harmony Gold, in which PB will publish new material for Robotech?

No. The license is still up for grabs and Palladium is focusing more on its own IPs being licensed right now. In any case, a new RPG from Palladium would have to conform to the current Harmony Gold canon for Robotech. This means that a pile of material from the old RPG would have to be changed or scrapped outright. Palladium feels that its time would be better spent using that time and energy on its own in-house stuff.

Well if that was the case, why did he even mention Robotech in the first place.....

It got my hopes up! :-?

As much as I would like to see a new Robotech RPG (and I would take Palladium ANY day over a D20 version)...I dont think its really economical for Palladium in the long run. Rifts is a majorly hot item now and Kevin would have to delegate rewritting the RPG to someone else...which he probably would be loath to do. Of course....I could be wrong...but I dont think Palladium and HG are in negotiations at this point.

Because at the time #18 was being put together, they hadn't yet decided to terminate the license.

I don't see why it would have, it doesn't say they were actually pursuing renewing the license. Kev instead asked a rhetorical question to argue against book piracy and the distribution of scanned or photocopied books on the internet.

Tip for future: If you don't hear something on PB.com or RT.com main pages.... assume the negative.

I would assume that the license will one day be picked up (hopefully). It seems like in the right hands, it could be lucrative deal for any publisher. We all know it sold well with Palladium originally, so when the Shadow Force is brought into the fold, you would think that someone would want to capitalize.

indeed. With all the hoping a few men can muster, we hope and pray that Palladium re-upts with Robotech.

However, since we should be realistic about this, I just hope it goes to anybody who will do a decent job with it. Other then PB, I don't exactly know who'd do a good job, but I know one thing. I'd love to see new product!

I've said it before and I will say it again. I'd love to see Dream Pod Nine tackle the Robotech license with the SilCore system.

Bah... no SilCore, regular old-fashioned Silhouette System. I would agree. As I've said before, the system would need to be tweeked a bit to be valid for things like VTs (building them as is is waaaaayyy to pricey on Point-Buy, however it can be done.
