Starship Scale

Unread post by jtjr26 »

I have a question about the scale to which the internal structure of star ships in the Three Galaxies are built to. I realize it can vary by species but for the large political entities that exist and have a wide variety of species that comprise them, what does that look like? Take the CCW for example. There are species ranging in size from some smaller than humans to larger then Seljuk. Even our primitive space craft give the astronauts a little clearance so they can stand up and not by hunched over all the time. What might be spacious to humans could be downright claustrophobic to others. Do ships both civilian and military factor that in and if so how much?

with a lot of the CCW's ships being built by the Wolfen, i tend to assume that their height is taken as the 'default' for things like ceiling height, and that the ship workstations just make use of either control panels and displays that can be adjusted in height, and/or seats that can be adjusted for different sizes of user.

For the CCW I would assume that they build to scale for the Seljuk since they are a member race. Though they may go more Wolfen scale if the number of Seljuk is few. TFE would build to Kreeghor scale for most things.

Still, I imagine 'busted head syndrome'(aka 'Gloval's Forehead'), cramped knees, and 'Kiddy Seat Squat' were common complaints during the early days of the CAF's integrated crews....

I want to start off by linking an older thread Giants and giant size races in starships that covered a lot of this topic.

My thinking on this has evolved a little over the years I mean see shows like Star Trek wear almost any PW race can move around but you also have TV shows like the Expanse with lots of room in most areas but then Star Wars still has the WWII ship aesthetic with many areas being cramped.

For me I just think it depends.

Kreeghor ships are going to be built for them with some level of accommodation for servant races.

A Dwarven Ironship is likely to have many areas that only comfortably fit dwarves while newer UWW ships can fit most races in the service, including the minotaur.

Altess ships would be designed only for them but they are likely to be so oversized of reasons of comfort and opulence that a full-sized titan or cyclops can walk around them.

Phase Fighters will fit a crew of stage 1 prometheans but probably have some near magic means of adjust seats and controls for any who wish to buy them.

CCW ships I think most will likely be designed for a minimum of wolfen but, for instance, the katan or anything by the Oni would be larger to accommodate them. The CCW is first and foremost a defensive organization for protection of its member worlds so I just think that while smaller ships might have limit on who can serve based on size but the big ships, no those will accommodate anyone.

I think civilian ships are the ones you would see being built to accommodate the largest variety species since they would want not just the widest variety of customers, but when those customers need crew they will want the widest variety of possible workers.
