Has anyone ever run a comedy campaign?

Unread post by StormSeeker »

I don't mean like a regular campaign with some jokes and funny moments, but entire campaign that's more like a comedy than an action movie.

I was watching Police Academy last night, and it gave me the idea of, well, just totally stealing the premise.
Picture this: Your characters are facing jail time, but the judge gives you the option of joining the army instead. You aren't allowed to quit, or you get locked up. But if you flunk out, so be it.
However, the minion war is heating up, the Coalition needs troops, and the training academies are under orders not to turn anyone away.

So the players are trying their best to get an unfit for duty discharge, but can't quit. The instructors are trying to get them to quit, but can't flunk them. Both sides have to keep it within reason to avoid a court martial (or at least not get caught)

Hijinks ensue.

The Rifter April fools' edition had the classic 'Escort the VIP Tourist and Keep Him Out of Trouble' adventure.
I've had variations of that, such as 'Rescue the Kidnapped Child'(only it's discovered the 'child' in question is a total brat who's run his or her current 'minders' to the verge of insanity with an apparently supernatural ability to get people around him/her into industrial levels of trouble). Other variations include 'Damsel in Distress: It's the Monster that Needs Saving'.

'Quest for the (Censored)"----The characters are hired, or blackmailed, by an employer with more money than scruples, or, as it turns out, good taste, to steal/acquire/recover something that the PCs would normally not go near with a fifty foot pole. It could be an eye-waveringly hideous sculpture, X-rated picture collection, collection of kinky clothing, or Emperor Prosek's polka-dot jockstrap. Whatever it is, merely asking about it is going to get the PCs funny looks, and the PCs would rather not be caught with the things in their possession, and would rather not be killed for having them in their possession, and at some point they're going to ask themselves if the money's really worth it or if taking the prison sentence really all that bad compared to actually trying to complete this mission.

Likewise, the notorious nasty little meddler Cupid is alway good for cringe-worthy comedy with the PCs falling in love with the wrong people thanks to the damn love arrows. Or, a reverse situation could have Cupid offering the PCs big bucks to protect him from some of his previous victims, who have acquired the resources to track the little bastard down and make him PAY for what he did to them.

Being stalked by circus clowns or Ludicrous Mages for being FUNNIER than them can make for a comedy campaign, especially if the feud is understood to be limited to a prank war, and not go beyond certain limits, Otherwise, it can get dark(and I mean DARK) really fast....

Yeah, sure. We used some of the content from Rifter 9 1/2. No giga damage, but we had a ludicrous mage and a tourist. the tourist was a player controlled character but the player was in on the details of the campaign, helping to keep the sillyness running. I had cribbed a lot of material from Mel Brooks movies and loony tunes, in keeping with the themes of 9.5

May The Force be with you always.
