New Forum now for The Rifter® Zero.x.x Project

Seeing that Matthew/ Prince Artemis is going forward with Rifter 0.1, and that it is a semi-official Palladium project, I figured a dedicated forum for the Rifter Zero project would be a great idea. Well here it is.

Hummm, how do you submit things for 0 issue rifters?

Fill out an unsolicited manuscript submission form and send it in along with your material.

email your submission to rifter0@gmail.com, then when i get it, I'll send you my mailing address for you to send the unsolicited manuscript form.

So... what happens when 10 of these things come out?

Truthfully, unless someone else does it, this will likely be the last one from me. The only reason I'm doing this one is I'm still unemployed, but I'll likely have a job by the time this one is done and I don't think I can handle doing this, my work, and my own writting.

But would Rifter .1 be the same as Rifter .10?

I don't think so, as the first issue would be the beta test version.

In versioning systems 1.1 isn't the same as 1.10.

They failed their Advanced Mathematics roll as well.

Actually, in scientific terms, it also relates a higher degree of accuracy...

i.e. 0.1 can range from 0.06 to 0.14, where as 0.10 ranges from 0.096 to 0.104

After .9 why not go to .01 .02...? Or if no one is adverse to making ones in between the established rifters, 1.1, 1.2?

What's the purpose of doing new ones as decimal points instead of adding more to the numbers?

I don't know why it wasn't "e-Rifter 1" or something to indicate it's electronic version.
It's not really being versioned after all.

The fact that there is no number above one indicates it's part of the digital line of Rifters?

Personally I'd prefer continuing with the whole Rifter 0 concept. The next one could be Rifter 00, then 000, etc. Or if that takes up too much room, use a superscript or a subscript, the first is Rifter 0, then Rifter 0², then 0³, etc, or Rifter 0, then Rifter 0₂, 0₃, etc. (I just don't like 0 indexing, and having a 1, even a 0.1, to indicate the second issue just makes it seem way too nerdy).

Ending at 0.2 seems odd, like a failure of a larger pattern, but ending at 00 or 0² seems like it wasn't meant to go much farther.

Have you seen us?

i like the Rifter 0₂ approach. Rifter 0² has mathmatical connotations that might be a bit odd. (zero times itself? multiplying by zero is impossible, and zero times anything is nothing..)

whereas Rifter 0₂ gets chemical connotations, as in "two atoms of [element]"

I think that leads to the same problem as with Rifter 00000, it just gets to long if it's a success. But Rifter 0x2, ... Rifter 0x5 ... could work, so I like it, or is that just as bad as Rifter 0⁵? (too mathematical?)

Maybe to avoid the math/science connotations we could go with "The 2nd Rifter 0" etc? Or even The Rifter Zero, Jr. and The Rifter Zero III, etc? I think "branding" it as "The Rifter Zero," and sticking with that in some way, is nifty.

Awesome. Or have it just print all the digits of pi. What font size would you need for that? 0.1? 0.10?

I like Thom's idea. Didn't Square-Enix do that with Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X2? Just do a Rifter Zero 2.

Yes but with the proper volunteer team, being that the first online Rifter was done by one person, well, we could get something going and gain the experience that Palladium deserves. I really believe that those that enjoy the product as most all of us do could figure out something.

I love the idea of a superscript/subscript. That would allow for the online Rifter (eRifter) to carry on with a bunch of Rifters without taking away from the term Rifter #0.

I'm sorry I missed Artemis' comment. Don't drop it! Find the time. Folks will remember you for it, but mainly and especially if you keep your hand in it. If you don't have enough time, delegate. Make it a spare time project if you must, or better yet take on the "executive" producer" power, just don't let it pass.

I'll admit, I'm willing to do some Editting (I seem to have a knack for it).

It's mostly a wait and see type of thing at this point. I won't be doing more than one a year regardless. Even though we have a system in place this time it'll still take a while. It usually takes 2 months just to get the submissions, let alone their forms. Then I gotta read everything to see if it works, send it to palladium with the forms. They do a quality control check and tell me what I can't use. Then I have to edit each piece, then put them into the magazine itself, then adjust sizes and format to make it fit. At some point I start getting some art as well which needs to be added to fill space and make it not look dull. Then I get it formated, do up table of contents, my opening letter, my own submissions (I usually wait to see why I get before doing my own stuff) and then send a rough to palladium for them to check over. They then start sending out the contracts and if there are corrections needed they send me the list, I make the changes, send them the new copy and then go through the version again with them over the phone to make sure it works, and make changes as needed.

Yeah, it can be time consuming...

If I end up in a job with high turn out for articles and that, I may not be able to keep it going. However, like the show I will try and do it until it basically becomes impossible to do.

My place of employment seems to think I can edit since they allow me to tutor English...

I have some time to proof read some of the material. Though I have no real skills in editing (except in my own stuff) I would be willing to help in any way possible.

See Artemis, voices from the wilderness saying they have abilities and are willing to throw in with you. Don't sweat the small stuff, find others to put in the sweat. You have enough to do in just coordinating, we know that, and your ideas are enough. Your complaints about tracking the details... really, if it is tedious or you don't have time, find someone to do it for you. Maybe you want to verify or validate their work, but, if they're good, that's not as time consuming as doing the work yourself. And all of us want to be good assistants. Helpers want to help, really. They're not doing stuff just to get their names up in lights, they're doing it to provide help, to make your job easier. Acknowledgment is cool, but, to me, it's really only satisfying if the work I've done really helps. If you can control it to the point where most of the time you're spending on it is "waiting" for others to come through, then what's the cost? Don't micromanage.

In any case, even if it takes so much of your time that the best you can manage is one per year, let it trickle through, I don't think that's a problem. Think about it, one per year, even one every few years, is still better than nothing!

Wasn't TheRifter.com supposed to be something along the lines that Rifter 0 is?

It was an area that people could submit there own stuff but they wouldn't be edited together in an actual organized book with art.

So its a mass Rifter for those that like to have their stuff in a "Rifter"
