Newbie question on how races work

Unread post by Asta »

hi all,

After choosing a non human race, how do classes get applied? For example, can a dragon hatchling also be a ley line walker? If so, how is this done?

Thanks!

It depends.

For ordinary player races like elves, dwarves, and wolfen, you choose a class just like a human character, with the relevant skills, powers, equipment, experience table and so forth.

For creatures that have a Racial Character Class, selecting an O.C.C. may or may not be possible, and may or may not have special modifications indicated in the actual R.C.C. description. Unfortunately, the rules for this vary widely, so each R.C.C. must be evaluated individually.

In your specific example, hatchling dragons usually cannot select an O.C.C. (there are a few exceptions, such as the Chiang-Ku). They only have the basic spellcasting abilities and skills provided by the Hatchling Dragon R.C.C. However, many adult dragons can select a magic or scholar O.C.C., thus gaining the abilities of that class at a preset level of experience, but otherwise continuing to advance according to their R.C.C.
There you go man, keep as cool as you can.

and keep on thinking free.

For races that are not mislabeled as RCC's then you just add the class to the racial text.
To give an example of this....PF2 presents the races as races so there is no confusion about what they are, and the classes for what they are.

If the Racial Text says the race can take a class other then the Racial RCC to start, then they can. [Most of these are races mislabeled as RCCs but have permissions are really just races that PB stuck the RCC label on for some weird reason.]
If the Racial has not permissions to take classes within the Text then a char of that race has to start off with the Race's RCC.
There are many races that are called RCCs because for some weird (or lazy) reason their racial text got smushed into the RCC text and the whole thing got labeled an RCC. And there are no specific permissions in them...but seam to be just another mortal race. GM's are needed to give an Okay to use these races w/o their RCC.

Which is basically a translation of what TD said into plane speak.

-----------
Dragons hatchlings....are .....there is text that implies that they have to stay with the racial RCC relatively permanently, and then there is text that implies that at least later in life they can choose to be another class.
Dragons are the worst example to be brought up cause it is more 'the exception to the rules' then a viable example that covers most or the 'racial/RCC/what the frapachino is that class/race' mess.
