MerFolk and the running skill.

Unread post by drewkitty ~..~ »

For a race of Merfolk (not the CoM mermaid..etc...), Would the Running skill, if taken as a replacement for the swimming skill, with a +20% skill bonus, be...

Applied to both the land speed and swimming speed, rolling once and both getting that die roll as the bonus?

Applied to both the land speed and swimming speed, rolling twice and each getting one die rolls as the bonus?

Applied to both the land speed and swimming speed, rolling once split between equally?
Or split between the two by the ratio between two spd's formed by their scores? (if it was 10 land-20water a die roll of 12 would be split 4 points to land spd and 8 points to water spd.)

Applied only to the land speed or the swimming speed?

Or some other option?
-----------------
Would the +20% change the bonus given in any way? (yep...had to add cause there are who like to "twist the text out of meaning & context" out there.)

Running adds 4d4 to land speed. being merfolk dosn't change the skill.

the % bonus means nothing if the skill has no % rating. same reasoning why any OCC that has +x% to physical skills dosn't actually add to running's bonus.

the running skill improves the SPD attribute, and swimming bases swimming speed on the SPD attribute. so Rules-As-Written, the running skill would increase the swimming speed.

however this has a bit of a logical disconnect, since running and swimming requires very different methods of movement, so applying the running skill bonus only to land movement, and using an unmodified SPD stat to determine your swimming speed is a logical house rule.

Incorrect, the swimming skill swimming spd is based on the char's PS.

What race of merfolk?

A not-CoM race that has a "Human" form and a "half fish" form.

No it does not. It increases your land speed/running speed. If the character wants to swim faster the only way they can do it is by buffing their P.S. to a point that the swimming speed they gain from their P.S. is greater then their racial swimming speed. Its actually not that hard most of the time. Otherwise, you are stuck relying on technology to enhance your speed.

Basically, nothing specific, just something made up.
In which case, it would have whatever you make up for it, and that's how it would work.
