How many pages long is a typical Rifter submission?

Unread post by Sethmo_Dreemurr »

So, after asking whether or not Palladium was still publishing books, most of you said that I'd have better chances publishing short stories to the Rifter. However, how many pages is a submission? I know that two to two-and-a-half computer pages of 10-11 point font single spaced text equals one Rifter page, but how many Rifter pages is a typical story? I've never bought a copy of the Rifter, so I have nothing to base it off of.

Thanks for the help!

First of all,

1. Do your homework

If you are going to submit a story to the Rifter, you ought to buy a copy of one to see what you are submitting to. It will give you a better idea of context, than just the submission guidelines.

2. In the submission guidelines, Wayne states the minimum is 4 to 6 pages, so you can start with that.

First of all,

1. Thanks for the help, even though you were unnecessarily rude about it.

2. The phrase “Do your homework” implies that I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m pretty sure that no budding author knew what they were doing at the start of their carreer. Cut me a little slack, would ya?

Here is the link to the Rifter Submission Guidelines, if you haven't seen it, yet.

Greetings and Salutations. Regardless of how you feel about the presentation of the advice, I will say this is good advice. Seeing what's already been printed may help you get a better feel for what Palladium is looking for. With that said, I'll try to provide an answer to your original question.

Rifter #15, 16, 17; One Chance in a Million: 17 (19 with art) pages in the first, 12 (14 with art) pages for the second, and 9 (10 with art) pages for the last one.
Rifter #36; Deep South - Into the Dark Woods: 9 full pages (9 if you count art).
Rifter #44; Chrysalis: Only full 2 printed pages (3 if you count art).
Rifter #74; Acceptance: 19 full printed pages (20 if you count art).

These are only a few samples picked mostly at random (I made the conscious choice to include at least one serialized story that took place over multiple issues). I do know know if this is "typical" or not, but at least starts you off with a rough idea. The quality will likely be a far larger factor to seeing print rather than the length itself. My advice (for what it's worth) ...

1: Let the story take however long it needs to take. If that's only 2 printed pages, so be it. If it's 50, then so be it.
2: If you decide the story needs to be a novel (or series of novels), then I recommend focusing on a chapter (or more) that can be rather self-contained (so, for example, Chapters 3, 7, and 11 of the novel). Being self-contained allows them to be submitted separately, while the characters may remain the same allowing an audience to become connected to them. If this goes well, this may improve your chances for a novel or a more traditional serialized story within the Rifters (though after Hammer of the Forge, I think Palladium became hesitant to let something run on too long).

Keep in mind, I've never had any story/fan fiction printed in a Rifter. My advice is just an opinion, and in the end you'll have to decide what will work best for you. If you'd like to research stories within the Rifters more, here's a list included in Spoilers for easy reference. Note: The list only goes up to Rifter #58 (or around there).

They seem to prefer between 5 and 10 pages.

Yes, I'd say 5 to 10 pages.
