Ugh, I've never liked the conceit of UEDF and ASC as seperate, since Southern Crossers are referred to as United Earth Defense Forces in the tv series.

Me, I'd no problem with local or UEG member state forces being able to be commandeered under orders of the *Global* Military Police.

In the episode "Robotech Masters" we see Earth-designed ships of the same type used in the 2nd Robotech War light years away. Combined with Carpenter's statements, its clear that Earth ships were operational by 2015 if you're using the TV series as part of the continuity.

No scenario that starts with "The ASC has crappy stuff" makes very much sense or follows the actual TV series. As for "why is this mecha used and then replaced?" questions for any of the designs...there's just really not much justification going on, which is part of why this book...
