Sort of depends on the barrier. Since, supposedly, glass beads can be used to dampen chi flow. Mirrors can be used to redirect chi, etc.

They're really the same thing. The trident is the type of weapon (Tiger forks are all tridents, but not tridents are tiger forks). Similar to how a lot of cultures have swords, but they're all different.

Either way, Tiger Fork requires two hands. Now, a lighterweight trident is a different story.l

For a little bit of character, ya could say (for ANY of the above reasons) that portions (perhaps all?) of the Sea of Scarlet Waters turns red from time to time. Blood? Algae? Excess minerals? Serpent's sloppy eating habits? Ship Crew's messy deaths? Could be anything.
