Palladium Books® Weekly Update – August 11, 2011

By Kevin Siembieda

Gen Con Report. Gen Con Indy 2011 was not the financial windfall we had hoped it would be. According to several artists exhibiting at the show, their sales were half of what they were last year. A few small exhibitors made similar comments. We can’t judge, as Palladium Books hadn’t attended Gen Con for a couple of years. I can tell you we did well selling product, there were throngs of people, all in cheerful spirits, there was an aura of fun and excitement, and we felt it was definitely worth attending. So much so that we have already booked our booth space for next year.

We had a large number of gamers tell us they were happy to see Palladium Books back at Gen Con. It was very gratifying to have so many people welcome us back to the event all weekend long, and we enjoyed chatting and autographing lots and lots of books.

People were loving the new Rifts® World Book One: Vampire Kingdoms™. It was our number one selling item as gamers swooped in early to snag their copy. Those who came back a couple days later were filled with praise for the book. One gent confessed he wasn’t happy when he first heard I was rewriting his favorite Rifts® World Book, but after reading it, he was delighted with it and was looking forward to the Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook™. Comments like that made my weekend.

Everything sold well with a lot of heat for Rifts®, Robotech®, Dead Reign™, Heroes Unlimited™, and Palladium Fantasy®.

I think we surprised people by displaying the covers to Rifts® Megaverse® in Flames (they loved it!) and Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook, and I was surprised by the number of folks who had not yet seen the cover to Rifts® Lemuria. All were a big hit and people were very excited about upcoming books. We had a lot of folks asking for new material for Nightbane®, Palladium Fantasy®, Beyond the Supernatural™ and Robotech®; they were thrilled to hear we have books in development for all of the above.

Dead Reign™ sold well, and the life size display zombie created by Kathy Simmons was the ‘smash hit’ of our display. Literally hundreds of people stopped to take their photo with the zombie every single day. And little kids (and I mean 3-9 year olds) came running over to him all smiles. Weird, but cool. Nice work, Kathy. But what else could we expect, she is the Queen of Ghouls. Matthew wants us to add 2-3 more zombies to next year’s display. That sounds like overkill to me, but we’ll see.

Good Gen Con help wasn’t hard to find. Brandon Aten, Nick Bradshaw, Matthew Clements, Mike Mumah, and Mark Oberle were awesome helpers (Wayne too, but he’s always a big resource on these trips). They were energetic, worked the cash registers, helped customers, made sales, helped with the grunt work of setting up and tearing down, and were a joy to work with. They were nothing short of fantastic. Thanks guys.

We had only a few minor, Gen Con misadventures: 1. Somehow we didn’t realize Gen Con opened an hour early on Thursday morning for VIPs. We weren’t at our booth and one of the Gen Con staff stood guard to shoo people away. Sorry about that.

2. A brigand, hoping our Penske rental truck might be loaded with valuables, cut the lock and broke into the back of the truck. Much to his disappointment, there were only empty boxes inside. Still, it made for some excitement and a police visit Saturday morning.

3. I lost $430.00 when Gen Con closed. I had emptied the cash registers and shoved the paper cash into an envelope, then must have laid it down on the table and someone snatched it up when we turned our back, or it was accidentally put in the trash by someone (we checked the booth several times to make sure nothing was left behind). Thankfully, I had taken the bulk of the cash and credit card receipts out a half-hour before closing. Still, I’m mad at myself for losing the money.

This was Matthew Clements’ first Gen Con. Here are his comments on the event. “Wow, it was huge, hectic and fun. In many respects it was a  mad house, but in a good way. Seemed like a constant flow of activity with someone to talk with or something to see or do every time you turned your head. I found it very motivational and inspiring. I had fun talking to fans and got good insight from them. I was especially excited to see so many people wild about the new books coming out and books we have planned for the near future. I had a lot of fun. I loved all the costumes and constant air of excitement, hanging out with Palladium gamers, meeting new people, and clowning around with Bradshaw, Aten, Mumah and the rest of the Palladium crew. I even got to game one night. It was a blast. I’m glad Kevin decided to return to Gen Con in 2012. Now, I can hardly wait for the Palladium Open House in May 2012; I hear it is just as wild and fun as Gen Con in a different way.”

Palladium will be at Gen Con Indy 2012. I polled the guys and they were unanimous that Palladium should attend Gen Con next year, so I have already booked our booth space for Gen Con Indy 2012. Between the Palladium 2012 Open House and Gen Con Indy in the same year, we expect to see a record number of Palladium gamers at both events. Start making your plans and saving up now. ;)

I agree with Matthew Clements, Gen Con was a blast. We felt welcomed by our fans throughout the entire weekend, sold lots of books, chatted, laughed and had a good time. It was great to see dear friends like Jolly and Barbara Blackburn, Larry Elmore, Shawn and Lisa Hall (it’s always a delight to hang with these two characters), Dennis Hughes (looking trim and happy), Lonnie Langston, Zachary Houghton, Mike Hummel, Amy Ashbaugh, Frank Mentzer,  and a gaggle of others. Please don’t be offended if I didn’t list you by name, that would be a lot of people like Dave, Milton, Sean, Steve, and on and on. Of course, we made new contacts with a few promising artists and potential business partners. Heck, I was so busy I barely took any Gen Con photos, and I’m certain there’s a ton of stuff I’m leaving out. Glad we went. Happy so many wonderful Palladium fans were there to greet us. We’ll be back in 2012. See ya at the Palladium Open House first. Palladium fans are the best of the best.

UPDATE: Online sales have skyrocketed since we announced Rifts® Vampire Kingdoms™ had arrived at the warehouse and was ready to ship.  Rifts® World Book 23: Xiticix Invasion™ as well as Sedition™ and Coalition Overkill™ have been selling well since they came back in print a week or two ago. Just as I suspected, we are also seeing a sales bump in Rifts® Lone Star, Rifts® New West™, Spirit West™ and Rifts® Arzno™: Vampire Incursion™, but we’re seeing sales across all game settings. Nice. Of course, pre-orders for Rifts® Lemuria, Robotech® New Generation Sourcebook and even Megaverse® in Flames are also coming in. That’s good, because we are fast at work to make sure these three books and a few others are released as soon as possible.

UPDATE: Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook. Fired up by the excitement over Rifts® Vampire Kingdoms™ and his Gen Con experience, staff writer Matthew Clements has dived into work on the Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook. “I’m going to do everything in my power to help get new releases out every month,” stated a confident Matthew. He tells me as soon as he’s finished with his work on the Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook he plans to finish Rifts® Black Market Sourcebook and is burning with ideas for the Rifts® Northern Gun™ sourcebook. Matthew is proving to be a dynamo at the keyboard and away from it.

As noted last week, Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook will be a 96-128 page book (probably the latter) that will contain everything that couldn’t fit in Vampire Kingdoms™ including, Fort Reid, more Reid’s Rangers, Techno-Wizard weapons, the Yucatan, the Mayan god Camazotz, Werebeasts, and more. We are still looking at a September release for this sourcebook.

Sneak Previews for Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook™ and Lemuria as FREE PDFs from DriveThruRPG.com in the weeks to come. Watch for them. Remember, each is just a taste of what’s in the book. There is so much more. To get the free PDF download of the Rifts® Vampire Kingdoms™ Sneak Preview, go to DriveThruRPG.com. It is easy to create a free account and only takes a couple of minutes. Sneak Previews of Armageddon Unlimited™ and Rifts® Thundercloud Galaxy™ are also available. DriveThruRPG.com is a good resource for getting the Hades & Dyval Map Pack, The Rifter® Number Zero, The Rifter® #1-48 and to fill in your RPG library with first edition copies of Rifts®, Palladium Fantasy®, Heroes Unlimited™, and other game lines, as well as books such as Nightbane® Book Four: Shadows of Light™ and both versions of the The Mechanoids® RPG (1985) and The Collected Mechanoid Invasion® Trilogy (1981-1983).

UPDATE: Rifts® Lemuria. The art should be done and I’m diving right back into work on Rifts® Lemuria and the Robotech® New Generation Sourcebook. We want these books out FAST. I think both of these books are going to please a lot of people. Place your pre-orders, because they will ship soon.

UPDATE: Robotech® New Generation Sourcebook. I’ll be working on it and Rifts® Lemuria to get them out over the next two months. I also very much want to see another Robotech® Sourcebook™ coming out this fall and another in early 2012.

UPDATE: Back in Print: Just a reminder that the following book are back in print and available now.

Available Now:

Note: All six books in the Coalition Wars/Siege on Tolkeen series are in print.

The following titles are also recently back in print and ready to ship:

UPDATE Alex. He’s trying to stay positive and is hanging tough.

Halloween Store – Queenofghouls.com – Kathy Simmons’ online store will soon be filled with new life-sized Halloween props that include killer clowns, jesters, mad doctors, zombies, witches, wizards, executioners, werewolves and monsters. In some ways, you can consider QueenofGhouls a fun extension of Palladium Books, because Kathy is a beloved staff member and because I help her paint many of these unique Halloween decorations. If you are looking for a standout Halloween item for your front lawn, one of these will do the trick. WARNING: Once you see one in person and get rants and raves from everyone who visits your home on Halloween, you may find yourself buying a new one every year.

Kathy has recently sold a couple of zombies, a scarecrow and a Christmas figure. Check out her Halloween store at QueenofGhouls.com. Her creations are durable and can be used year after year. Gamers have loved the ones we’ve had at the Palladium Open House and Gen Con – they are truly awesome. Halloween is just around the corner.

Palladium to attend Detroit Fanfare, September 24 & 25

We’ve gotten confirmation of our end cap and are looking forward to seeing gamers from Michigan, Ohio and the surrounding area to come on down. The event is the Detroit Fanfare, September 24 & 25 at Cobo Hall, downtown Detroit.

One of the guests is Kevin Eastman – co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles®. So this fun comic book and media convention will be a great chance to get your Ninja Turtles® game books (and comics) signed by one of the creators. Other guests include fan boy favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, and dozens and dozens of comic book guests. Palladium fans may be interested to know Dave Dorman (Palladium cover artist), Tim Bradstreet, and pal, Defiler and Palladium contributor of old, William Messner Loebs will also be attending, among many other guests. I’ll keep you posted as we firm up the details.

Click here for more information about Detroit Fanfare.

Alliance Trade Show, October in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This is a trade show for retailers, but many hard working store owners and their employees are gamers and Palladium fans. I invite you to bring books for us to sign for your own collections and/or to put in your store as an extra selling feature. We’re happy to do it. I, Kevin Siembieda, and Wayne Smith will be present at the event. Also, please drop by to chat and get the latest news and developments at Palladium.

UPDATE: 2012 Palladium Open House (POH). Spread the word. If this may be our last Open House (due to lack of parking), let’s make it the biggest and best ever. Gen Con is spectacle, the Palladium Open House is nonstop fun and gaming with the very people who make the games at the very place they are designed. You are part of our extended family and we invite YOU into our home to game, chat, and meet dozens of Palladium creators. The surrounding is intimate and friendly. I think there are only a few VIP Night admissions currently available, but we will “re-offer” twenty or so again in February 2012. I’m happy to report that POH orders come in every week. Make sure you are one of the folks attending. RESERVE your hotel now! It guarantees your room, helps Palladium so we can block more rooms if we need them, and the hotel does not charge your credit card until the actual event. We have gamers coming from across the USA, Canada, England and Germany! Join the fun.

I have been busy catching up on things and dealing with various business matters most of this week, but I’ll be diving into the Vampires Sourcebook and/or Lemuria this weekend. Meanwhile, you keep those imaginations burning bright.

The Palladium Open House

2012 Palladium Open House – May 4-6, 2012

The Palladium Open House is like nothing you have ever attended. It has a fun, family feel and is three days (four with VIP night) of games, fun and wonderful memories. People talk about it for years, and this may be the last one ever.

● Meet 40+ Palladium creators available throughout the entire event.

● Game with half of the creators present.

● Get autographs from all Palladium creators.

● Have the time of your life.

● We are hosting this event because YOU begged us to do it. So come on over. I promise to make it as special as possible.

● Costume Contest with cool awards and meaty prizes.

● Panel talks that are fun and insightful.

90+ Gaming Events:

  • Rifts®
  • Robotech®
  • Chaos Earth™
  • Nightbane®
  • Heroes Unlimited™
  • Ninjas & Superspies™
  • Phase World®/Three Galaxies™
  • Dead Reign™
  • After the Bomb®
  • Palladium Fantasy RPG®
  • Beyond the Supernatural™
  • and more . . .

This may be our last Open House. Having sufficient parking is becoming a big issue. You may have to car pool from the hotel as it is. And the event is a ton of work that takes four weeks out of our production schedule. It is especially hard on Kathy Simmons, who coordinates most of it and does the catering (we’ll try to help her more). So we may make this our big, final Open House blow out.

V.I.P. Thursday (May 3, 2012). Available now. YOU are the VIP. You get in an afternoon early (doors open at 3:00 PM – catered dinner at 5:30 PM) and are the first to play in special game events, participate in special panel talks, purchase items, and enjoy a dinner catered by Kathy Simmons (and those who have been to past VIP nights know how awesome that is). Reserve your place today.

Weekend Admission is Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Reserve your place today. Placing your order early helps us on many levels, and tells us how many people to expect and how many hotel rooms to reserve.

Individual Day Admission - Friday - Saturday - Sunday might work better for you. If you can only make it one day, that’s cool. Reserve your slot.

Hotel is the location you love at the same 2009 rates ($69.95 a night). The hotel does not charge your card until a day before the event, so reserve NOW. I’m concerned they might run out of rooms. Based on the economy, the hotel has not reserved the entire hotel for us as they have in the past. Book your room fast so you know you have a place to stay. The hotel now offers free hot breakfasts and we will have two conference rooms for late night gaming and open gaming.

We need G.M.s. This means we’ll be looking for volunteer Game Masters (you get a T-shirt and a discount on books if you run three “official” games or more).

Plan to enter the Costume Contest. Winners get a nice plaque and real prizes. Rifts/sci-fi, fantasy, modern (includes horror) and best of show are the categories.

Click here for more details and to reserve your tickets.

The Queen of Ghouls: Life-Sized Halloween Props

Check out the new creations by Palladium’s very own Kathy Simmons. See her zombie doctor and other new zombies, Jack Skellington and Sally, and more. New creations are on the drawing board, and so is a new website. Each Halloween prop is truly life-sized (most are 6 feet or taller – Jack is almost 8 feet) and seems almost alive.

Each is an all-weather, life-sized Halloween prop that can handle rain and snow, and is a one-of-a-kind work of art (no two are exactly the same). Each looks frighteningly “real.” All come apart and fold down to slightly larger than a king-size pillow for easy storage. Comes with easy instructions, a plastic storage bag, and the lawn stake to stand it up in your front yard. Indoor stand sold separately.

Types of “Ghouls” include: Zombies (all kinds!), killer clowns, wizards, witches, devils, grave ghouls, scarecrows, executioners, mad doctors, deadly nurses, vampires, werewolves, and more. Kathy's also now offering an array of hand-painted Halloween signs, signs with heads and bodies hanging from them, witch's brewing pots, Halloween centerpieces and more. Best of all, her high quality creations are much more affordable and imaginative than most competitors or mass produced items in a store, making them affordable Halloween fun.

If you think the photos online look good, you should see them in person. A typical “ghoul,” as she calls her creations, costs $129-$259. You can see some of her work at her Queen of Ghouls™ Ebay store – queenofghouls.com.
