3D Spaceship Reference art

Update 8/13/12: Okay, I'm sad to say the large gallery of spaceship art that was accessible through this thread is no more. The original forums that hosted the images have trashed their archives, leaving all of the image links broken.

My art has evolved over the past several years, so I can't say that I'm entirely sad to see my early work no longer up, but do not fear; the image in my sig links to my DeviantArt gallery page, and in my gallery I've created a sub gallery just for spaceships and the like.

Currently I am working on Palladium Fantasy RPG Paper Miniatures for sale on DriveThruRPG; if the sell well, I expect to do a set of Phase World minis next, and that should lead to deck plans, and maybe a book of ships? Only time will tell...

-Mike <8]

..Back for your convenience, I've created an index of each of the different types of ships I've designed in 3D. Just follow the links and you'll be on your way to space adventure!

..Note that the ships are categorized by class as presented in the Aliens Unlimited Galaxy Guide, so there is probably a bit of cross over between each of the categories.

-Mike <8]

INDEX of Transports- Larger freight vessels, convertable to poor-man's warships

INDEX of Shuttles - Perfect Adventure group ships, from tiny runabouts to Millenium Falcon size to Firefly sized ships

INDEX of Fighters - Generally one to four man warships

INDEX of Capitol Ships & Stations - Larger ships, generally heavily armed and space stations

..Thanks, it didn't take long once i got down to it; when I do more now I can just update the index posts and they'll all be handy.

Sounds very cool Gadrin. Unfortunately I have to wait until I'm at home to look at that one. Yes if you could forward a link to me. That would be cool. Just one thing........ does that software support Vista?

..Unlikely. I'm still working 80+ hours every week; today I'm a bit sick and it's my slow day so I've been able to take a few breaks; I'm still not done and won't likely be for another two hours.

..Judging from the traffic, I think everyone is missing out on the Shuttle category; the difference between these and the Transports is simple; Transports are the larger bulk cargo carriers, and shuttles are the smaller cargo ships, from tiny runabouts to larger Millenium Falcon or Firefly type ships...

Great work, I like the ships, the Proctor Class Interceptor, for Phase World, is my favorite. When will its interior be done?

..I'm afraid I just don't have the computing power to knock them out like I'd like. I'm quite possibly getting a new computer within a month or two. I've made efforts in the ast with varying success; here's a few links to some samples:

Cargo Bay
Cargo Bay again
Bear Interior
Rusty Narb Commons
Rusty Narb Bridge
Light Stealth Runner Bridge
Light Stealth Runner Bridge again

..On an up note, I added a new ship to the Transport category.

Thank you Gadrin for your response! Although at this time I don't remember the question.

..Actually I do mine in Poser 6, but the functions are almost the same; DAZ|Studio doesn't recognize some of the morphs I've used on some of the parts of some of the ships, but most of them could be done there.

Coolness. I've just discovered Wings 3d and am starting to work up models as a basis for illustrations. Still a freakin' newbie at it, but have managed to work up the following:

..Those are cool. Have you ever played Freelancer? You can plug your Wings3D designs straight into the game as your character's ship. One of my buddies actually designed a SAMAS suit and loaded it into the game once, it was pretty cool.

It looks awesome! For a shuttle it looks like it might have quite a cargo capacity! Mike is your creation a system shuttle or a long range shuttle?

..The GM and I agreed that it should follow the Millenium Falcon in looking like a junker but having some good upgrades hidden underneath, so it would be long range.

..I'd say probably about 4 hours, two for the body and two for the cockpit; I had to render them separately and photoshop them together.

Hey Mike, do you have a set standard for sizes on your ships, particularly the ones in the shuttles index? I'd love to test out some numbers for statting out ships on some of these (for Phase World), but I would need some dimensions to work with.

Including a reference figure in an ortho shot is great -- for instance, I was able to work out the following estimates for the Fast Courier Shuttle based on the one in the side shot:

Length: 91.08 feet
Width: 83.76 feet
Height: 37.23 feet
Main Body MDC: 1,200

Also, do you have any ortho shots of this ship from the front?

Posted: Thu Mar 06, 2008 3:43 pm
by MADMANMIKE
..Actually, right now I don't even have that ship on my hard drive; I'll see if I can dig up the disc it's backed up on and do a front render.

..I guess I take for granted my spacial sense and didn't think of doing those shots; I try to include a person in shots with the doors or loading ramps to give the scale.

..My mother could look at a sofa for a few minutes and tell you how many yards of fabric she'd need to reapohlster it, and rarely have more than a square foot of fabric left over.

That's certainly a gift. I used to be good at estimating distances, but that kinda atrophied after I stopped playing Battle Fleet Gothic (was a fair terror with my nova cannons).

I've been looking over these ships again, and I think I'd be able to work things out based on the panels in the cargo ramp (granted, using an average height for the reference figure wherever possible instead). It appears that the panels are 2' wide -- making cargo bay doors such as the one on the Costamus Freighter approximately 8' wide. That sound about right to you?

86ft long by 89ft wide by 14ft high, give or take a few inches in each direction. Poser can switch native unit measurement to feet, so all I have to do is toss in the cube, which measures exactly one foot on each side, and increase one sides dimensions until it is the same width or length as the ship in question.

..Don't know why I didn't think about that before..

..Something to do with future ship designs and when there's time I'll add the info to each of the existing designs as well. Right now I'm working on an image to submit to the RIFTER swimsuit issue, WIP posted in my RIFTS forum.

..I have several sets of parts I use to put the ships together; they work basically like virtual legos. All were designed by Davorama, and are available from Power Fusion 3D.

..My experience with DAZ Studio is limited and frustrating; I use Poser 6 pretty much exclusively; Except that I've started using Bryce 6.1 to do renders, and that means using D|S to import my Poser characters; Basically I put them together and in the poses I want in Poser, then save them as characters; When I go into Bryce I click the D|S button and load the characters in D|S; then I quit that and it takes me and the characters in to Bryce to place in the scene where I want them.

..The major downside to this process is that Davo's parts have two main body sets, and on one there is a Taper morph (which I use quite often); D|S doesn't recognize the taper morph and thus usually resets the parts to their original state when you load the characters there; I'm stuck with exporting an OBJ of the entire character from Poser and importing it straight to Bryce; this limits what I can do as I'm still on this clunky old iBook with a measly 768MB of RAM.

..Still, the wingboard I made for Evie on page 59 of Rifter 43 is from Davo's parts and was imported to Bryce in this fashion with little difficulty, so I continue to push the limits..

..I've been using Bryce for the lighting effects. Lighting is the most difficult thing to master in Poser or D|S from what I've seen.

..Your stuff is awesome dude. Does the program you use create a texture template? There are some freebie programs out there that will generate them for you if it doesn't.

..Those textures would be easy in Poser; just load them as a bump map. D|S on the other hand, I have no idea...
