Should I go????
Ok, this may sound a little weird but here goes. I used to play RPG's all the time in Jr. High/High school. Some of the best memories I have in my life are playing those games. RIFTS, damn, some great memories. When I first heard of last years open house I thought it was a brilliant idea. I knew I instantely wanted to go but couldn't. I now have the money and time to make it to the 2007 event. The only problem is that I haven't played in like
10 years. I still collect Palladium books but my old friends are gone, I've moved, married, divorced, etc.... just haven't been able to play. The question is...should I go??? As weird as it may sound, I wouldn't want to slow any games down; being out of the RPG loop for so long and all. My play style used to be Hack n' Slash, although I know I can ROLE play, I've done it plenty of times. I miss the hobby a lot and I think something like this could fill a void that is long standing in my life. I just don't want to be "that guy" who shows up, stands there the whole time and is too shy to go up and ask to join a game. I know it sounds weird but dang, being out of it for so long makes me feel a little, well, strange. Those of you who went last time and those attending for the first time, let me know what you think. Thanks guys and RP- on!!!!!!

..Absolutely you should go!
..I have Asperger's Syndrome, so although I've built a pretty normal facade, it's only within the realm of familiarity. I've never gone to a convention before, let alone traveled so far away from my family for so long a time, so I was reluctant to go last year for the same fears you have.
..But Xar, who I've played RPG's with online a few times over the past few years, convinced me to go. He drove, and Eryk Stormbright and his wife met us here in my town and we went up together. None of us had ever met face to face before, but it was like a family. The whole thing was like a big family get together.
..I don't think I ever had so much fun in my life. Meeting so many of my closest friends from the boards here was cool, getting to play was cool (always a Game Master, never a player), hanging with Kev and the gang was awesome.
..You meet people there then the next morning you go down to the continental breakfast and the room is full of the people you met. It's too cool.

Yes you should go! Don't let a little rust scare you off, I have no doubt that you will be in the flow in no time. All the open house GMs are great so no worries there. If you are just standing around and feeling shy or overwhelmed, I am sure lots of people will recruit you go join in a game. The open house is a very friendly welcoming event, the only problem will be is when it is over you will wonder where the time went. I will be running events all weekend and you are welcome at my table. Hope to see you there.

..Oh yeah, don't worry about being rusty. Despite 18 years of GMing Palladium Games off and on, I had never once played a character before the Open House. My first game was Julius Rosenstien's Heroes Unlimited game, and I fell right into the roll.

Even if you're not comfortable playing, just being around the games is enough to make you want to start playing again. There are a lot of people that aren't playing the games that you can hang out with, or just enjoy watching other games being run (which will definitely give you the "itch" so you'll most likely join in a later game).
I didn't get a chance to play any games last year (although I really wanted to play in Jason Richard's Chaos Earth Campaign and Carmen's Killfest 2006 HU game). But just being there and talking to so many Palladium fans fired me up to start harassing my play group to start another HU campaign when I got back home.
Just like MADMANMIKE said, even though you're meeting people in person that you've never met before, it feels very normal, like they're family because you know everyone there is a fan of RPGs and Palladium games, so you've already got something in common that you can chew each other's ear off, and they be genuinely interested in the conversation.
Plus the PB staff is really a great group of people.

Go. It is tons of fun... and seeing/meeting Santa Kev in person is like.... words fail me. It's wonderful wonderful wonderful. I've been to several conventions just to see Palladium, and the Open House by far was the most fun. Go! It really is like seeing family, the family you like to see at that.
Hope to see you there!

I'll go ahead and re-state this here. For ANYONE coming to the next Open House, you are more than welcome to come and hang with my posse (which should be much bigger this year) without having to worry about being judged or whatever keeps you from socializing. As long as I'm not running a game, I'll be more than happy to hang out and meet new people.
And for those of you who don't know what I look like, my picture is floating around this forum (even though I hate pictures of myself).

I glad you asked the question I was feeling much like you about it but this thread helped make up my mind, I am going!
Something I'm doing now to wear some of my rust off is playing games in the chats and just watching games that are closed for new players not to mention just chatting with other gamers to find out what all has changed and/or been updated. You should drop into the chat sometime none of us bite ... well so far they don't, but a couple of them do worry me LOL

keep in mind, you could always buy coach seat tickets and then on the day of the flight, when you check in, you can ask to upgrade to 1st class/business class... it ends being cheaper for 1st class this way.Randomfist wrote:I'm running out of excuses not to go. Like Mike, I am also not neurotypical (i.e. I have difficulty with social situations). Despite that, I had an absolutely wonderful time at the last open house and plan to go to them as long as they are held.

Damn, if it weren't right near finals time I'd offer to show you around St. Louis and Springfield after events ended. Chicago isn't too far from Detroit and has some excellent sights to see. I recommend the Sears Tower at night, Shedd Aquarium, and the Natural History Museum. You might also want to check out Navy Peer and perhaps Water Tower Plaza if you have a decent hunk of money. Oh, and the deep dish pizza is not to miss!

Consider it a deal. Although, if I went out there it'd probably just be a day trip. I go to Champaign a lot for the Weinerschnitzel (sp?) there. It's the only one east of the Mississippi.

That's kind of you to offer! And one of the great advantages to commuting in the US by foot intead of car is that I get to burn off all the pizza I indulge in over there Worked last year!
Anyhow, I have my USA by Rail, 5th and 6th editions handy; I plan on Amtrakking from the Open House at least to the west coast and back to Chicago. If time and money then permit, there is a tour leaving Chicago mid-May that I may be able to squeeze into my trip.

Truth be told, I like them both (though the fact that the place in Chi-town used some kind of beer in there batter added that extra element of flavor).
My favorite pizza of all time has to be a place back home (pretty close to St. Louis as a matter of fact) called Pogolino's though... ok I need to stop talking about this before my stomach crawls out my throat and starts stalking the local wildlife.

Dude pick me up a Imo's with the works when your come. I miss IMO's alot.lol. Main thing about living here is the lack of good food. Well food that doesn't involve beans and rice anyway.
Oh and I Remember Pogolinos, there use to be one in St.Clair IIRC.
