Fantasy in HU

Unread post by RockJock »

In the last six months I've played a few Palladium Fantasy games, and tonight in my sleep deprived state I was considering the possibilities of using PF characters in the world of HU. Several approaches popped into my head. Create them as the Ancient Weapons Specialist or whatever it is called in PU, or as a sort of enchanted weapon/object character. Now I'm leaning toward a third option of straight PF characters.

The plot line goes a group of young gamers were playing their weekly game, and somehow came in contact with a dragon(probably fleshed out as the dragon immortal, but I need to look at it again). The dragon was stuck my the similarity between the character played by the group, and friends he once had several lifetimes ago on another world. The dragon gives each a ring(or bracelet, amulet, whatever) that turns them into their character. All would be fairly stereotypical. Beard something the Axe swinging Dwarven Merc, an Elven Long Bowman ect. Each would be magically granted the skills, equipment, and even accent of their character when the magic artifact was used. While these characters wouldn't have huge personal abilities(nightvision for the dwarve and elf, increased PP, or PE ect) they would be mid level men at arms(4-6th) and armed and armored like their characters were. This would involve at least one magic weapon a piece, probably magic armor, and a handful of magic rings, boots, ect. A knight or paladin would probably get a magically created horse or something as well. The dragon would act as sort of a guiding force steering the group, and providing some support like replenishing equipment, and giving advice. He might also send the characters on quests and occasionally go with them. I'm sort of going for a feel a little like the cartoon Gargoyles from the 90s crossed with the crazy kid at the game store who just has to play a clone of Legalos.

What does everyone think? Ideas? Suggestions? I haven't sat down and fleshed the idea out, but I don't think they would be all that powerful.

I don't have the PFRPG, but one would think that since they're both SDC games you should be able to bring in fantasy characters without TOO much trouble. I could be wrong though.

On the other hand, I think the Empowered and Immortal categories in PU2 have opened up even more potential for fantasy-themed characters in Heroes Unlimited.

Truth be told, though, just about any non-technologically based category could be spun to have a fantasy motif.

Very True Uncle Servo. I was just thinking that having the PCs with an alter identity as their Fantasy characters was just a different twist. And I like the idea of the group being guided by an ancient dragon slightly off his rocker.

you might have it that the dragon is using the group to power up the rings experience so he can make a something. The something can be anything from a new type of weapon that automaticly can fire itself accutately, or the built up skills could be granted to the wearer, or that the souls of the dragon's compainons are traped in the rings and once the wearer gain enouph experience (or has worn the ring a ceartain amount of time) the dragon's compaions are 'reborn' taking over the wearer.

I was actually thinking that whatever the power objects end of being will slowly turn the chracters into the dragons friends permanently and surpress their personalities. So the dragon is sort of the crazy good guy. He is just trying to find a way to resurrect his friends.

I am fairly certain on the plotlines, but I am still working out the mechanics. That is why I was trying to figure out the best way to approach the switch over. The heroes need access to at least the OCC skils of the palladium characters. What good is a Elf Longbowmen without being a great shot with a bow? It would be, in a plot sense, that the characters were "using" the skills of the fantasy characters instead of actually having them. I know I could make them out to be HU characters stylized after Fantasy chracters, but I think I want to go more toward them being transplanted. For equipment standard weapons of good quality enchanted by a PF alchemist, armor likewise enchanted, maybe even something like a Skin of Iron ring to give the characters some natural AR under their armor(or just make it that the chracter PF character vanishes when he hits zero replaced by the kid), Boots with Fleet Feet, that sort of thing.

And yes it will be the feel of the Black Knight in NYC. Instead of Dane Whitman studying and training on how to use the Ebony Blade effectively the kid turns into a knight with all the knowledge. Instead of being a Ancient Weapons Specialist they are the original archer, kinght, or whatever trained to use the relatively minor magic weapons and equipment.

I just thought it was a different angle and wanted to see what other people thought about it. I also need to look into how many players(I'm looking at having 3-4) and what classes they would like. Warriors would be easiest, but a Mage(especially something like a Warlock), or psychic wouldn't be out of the question.
