You know, I talked to Kevin about this a while back and got the sense that he didn't really care for that aspect. Who knows, maybe a change in canon is in order?
As far as where the power comes from, that's always been one of the appeals of the setting. No one knows where the power/Nightbane come from, though it is hinted that it somehow has to do with the Nightlands and the Formless Ones.
In short, I have no specific answers for you. But you never know, some of this stuff may be covered in the book that is due out this year (have we even seen a title yet?). Until then, I'd say it's up to GM's to figure it out.

So they keep it mysterious for the appeal, huh? Well, maybe Nekie or someone will know somthing.

One I have never cared for also. Its one of the few things I axe'd for my game when I was running Nightbane.

Honestly, I prefer it that way as well. It gives the players a lot more options regarding character histories and whatnot.

Well yeah it's part of the appeal (at least it always has been for me). It is a mystery that the player group can attempt to solve for themselves by searching for information on their origins. It also keeps the players (and GM's) guessing as to whether the Nightbane are a force of good, neutral in that they have free will, or just a puppet of a different evil. They are an unknown "X-factor" in the War of Light and Dark (which is another interesting topic for the players to look into).

Has anyone pinged CJ as to what he envisioned this as turning out to be?
Ooh, and while you're at it - see what the chances are of him wanting to write another might be...

"Things aren't what they used to be" is the rallying cry of small minds. When men say things used to be better, they invariably mean they were better for them, because they were young, and had all their hopes intact. The world is bound to look a darker place as you slide into the grave.

I was under the impression CJ and PB had gone their merry ways and "never the twain shall meet" or something like that. Any future products are probably going to come from a new author like the last couple books did.
Personally I love the always orphan aspect of the Nightbane because it leaves the doors wide open for backgrounds, also it leaves it up to GMs to figure out if they even want to deal with where they come from or if a character starts trying to figure out where they came from it springs forth a whole slew of adventures
Love the mysterious aspect of Nightbane.
I too love the mysterious aspect of Nightbane. That's what appeals to me the most. I also wonder how it all plays out in the grand scheme of things in the Megaverse with the Old Ones and the Wars of Light and Darkness. Lots of great conspiracy theory ideas from this RPG.

Anyway: C.J. Carella has gone on record in the past saying that he didn't say why all nightbane are orphans diliberatly to keep it a mystery and allow the GM's to come up with their own ideas for games.
But he also eventually relented and gave what his own idea was. Nightbane are actually the reincarnated spirits of the Formless Ones, taking life at first as a human, and giving their true nature and power in the form of the unlimited nightbane.
This is why they are all orpahs: they are not born so much as materlize on someone's doorstep. This is also why they cannot have children.
of course, sinse he never put that in cannon, you are free to change things some if you want to like I do

Sometimes, you're like a beacon of light in the darkness, giving me some hope for humankind. ~ Killer Cyborg
You can have something done good, fast and cheap. If you want it done good and fast, it's not going to be cheap. If you want it done fast and cheap it won't be good. If you want something done good and cheap it won't be done fast. ~ Dark Brandon

Good to know at least.
