T.R.: "No, really. Why'd you do this?"
Mother Edwards: "Because if you had gone into accounting like your father and not gone on to become a mercenary, and left us holding the bag for your debts, maybe we couldn't have had to get creative to pay them off and keep our house, And payback is SO sweet, as you well know."

"God...this coffee tastes like dishwater!"
"That's because it IS dishwater. We have to recycle just about everything until we can get back to Earth, and we're bound to run out of some things, like coffee."
"But...but...coffee is a military ESSENTIAL! We can't be drinking dirty water!!!"
"JUst imagine it as really bad military coffee. It's not like moaning and groaning about bad coffee isn't a favorite military pasttime, and besides, it will take your mind off where the water's been before it was dishwater, and how many times it's been recycled already."
"......I just lost all appetite...."

"after living for 6 months off what passes for zentreadi food.. this 40 year old pork patty ain't too bad" - Pvt. Andersmith, UEDF Marine Corps.

and the bit about recycling reminds me a scene in Yamato 2199.. a crewmember (with a fairly heavily laden plate) asks the head scientist how the OMCS (a ship system which synthesizes the food they eat, among other things) gets the raw materials it needs to make the food. the scientist just pauses for a second, then remarks "just don't worry about it"

given that zentreadi live on their starships, an OMCS type recycling and synthesis system seems likely.. the SDF-1 probably had one too, which would explain where the food came from.. presumably the limited supply of rations early on in the voyage back to earth reflected a situation where the either the system was not yet fully online.. or was still being programmed to make earth type foodstuffs.

in regards to MRE's.. the website i linked too is a great resource on those.

and i can see the UEDF making a lot of Humanitarian daily rations for distribution to the refugee's right after the end of the 1st war.. they aren't exactly high cuisine, but they'd be easy to produce, and be an excellent basic food supply that could be shipped in bulk. (HDR's can even be air dropped from planes without pallets and parachutes in a pinch)

That was my thought too...and considering that it was Zor's personal fortress, the synthesis systems were probably of better quality/finer culinary definition too.
Personally I like the Schlock Mercenary MREs...the older they are, the better they taste. So a 100-year-old meal packet is considered luxury dining.
And I've had the pork patty back when Job Lot was selling what they called 'MREs'(but were likely meant for the general outdoorsmen trade). Pretty good eating(sad to say, they never had them again), though if I found the ones I misplaced back then, I'd be rather leery of even opening them now. .

i have some 'civilian' MRE's (ones made by the same companies as the military ones, but in different packaging to make them legal to buy)
i keep at least one in my car's emergency kit in case of emergencies.
though the first couple i bought i consumed eventually, since i wasn't sure about the shelf life where i was living in the desert.. those two were basically exact copies of military ones.. they were decent. i could see where they'd get tiresome quickly, though.

though i wish i could find more information on tthe MRE's of other nations.. i know which companies make the swedish and norwegian MRE kits, but can never find any details on what exactly they put in them..

I recently saw an article...it might even have been in a National Geographic, in one of their 'food issues', a 2-page spread comparing the MREs of the major nations engaged in Iraq/Afghanistan peacekeeping...America came off initially rather badly, but as the makers and dieticians listened, the 'trade factor'(how many American MREs could be traded for another nation's) turned around in our favor.

I think I saw somewhere were they had a competition on who had the best MRE's. The US did very badly. :-(
