"after living for 6 months off what passes for zentreadi food.. this 40 year old
pork patty ain't too bad" - Pvt. Andersmith, UEDF Marine Corps.
and the bit about recycling reminds me a scene in Yamato 2199.. a crewmember (with a fairly heavily laden plate) asks the head scientist how the
OMCS (a ship system which synthesizes the food they eat, among other things) gets the raw materials it needs to make the food. the scientist just pauses for a second, then remarks "just don't worry about it"
given that zentreadi live on their starships, an OMCS type recycling and synthesis system seems likely.. the SDF-1 probably had one too, which would explain where the food came from.. presumably the limited supply of rations early on in the voyage back to earth reflected a situation where the either the system was not yet fully online.. or was still being programmed to make earth type foodstuffs.
in regards to MRE's.. the website i linked too is a great resource on those.
and i can see the UEDF making a lot of
Humanitarian daily rations for distribution to the refugee's right after the end of the 1st war..
they aren't exactly high cuisine, but they'd be easy to produce, and be an excellent basic food supply that could be shipped in bulk. (HDR's can even be air dropped from planes
without pallets and parachutes in a pinch)
