Also: under non-human characters:
-The Malfunctioning Giant Robot(‘Malf’ or ‘Mal’)---A prototype GMP Robot which makes snide remarks behind people's backs, plays music like a jukebox, and throws snowballs at the backs of people's heads. Malf has seen a number of changes over the years, owing to various mechanics tinkering with him and trying out new modifications(not all of them successful).

-The Animal Mascot---Doctor Smith’s Pollinator, and a hell of lot smarter than most of the people in base...SOMEBODY's doing crossword puzzles in the commander's office after hours...The Pollinator has enough commonsense NOT to be anyplace where its intelligence can be spotted, and avoids danger with precognitive ease.
What people don’t further realize is that the Pollinator has been keeping Doctor Smith in check; the Pollinator has no desire to be at ground zero for an outbreak of a genetically engineered plague, so the critter has been distracting Doctor Smith at critical moments, or otherwise sabotaging his more excessive experiments.

-The Black Box---This is an experimental AI that went terribly wrong and got shipped, along with its creator) to Ice Guard. The AI’s creator may have passed away(he up and ran away into the arctic night and hasn’t been seen since), but their legacy remains in the form of their flawed creation. The AI, or AIs(there could be several of them, or one AI with a bad case of MPD) are now simply stand-alone hardware cases with audio and visual inputs, but not linked to any mobile hardware(essentially brains in jars). They can be fonts of wisdom if questioned or posed a problem to solve(though the answer might be delivered in some elaborate cryptic fashion), or they can alternatively spew meat-hating invective and threats to destroy everybody if ‘let out of this box’. The Black Box(es) also has some very rude things to say about somebody named ‘Ted’.

-The Iron Guard(Kargan3033)---The Iron Guard are a series of robot weapons systems kitbashed together by the Ice Guard mechanical staff when they were bored, and feeling they could improve on the GMP Golem. They’ve managed to pull together a variety of scrap parts and questionable AI sources(including the occasional grudging and inconsistant input of the AI ‘expert’ responsible for the Black Boxes). to create, currently, thirteen self-directing warmachines. Each of the Iron Guards is different, ranging in size from small(human sized) to full mecha conversion, and in personality from borderline zen pacifist to barely-restrained genocidal maniac. Yet another reason for other Ice Guards to avoid wandering into the motorpool unescorted, which suits the staff there just fine.

-Searchlight Drones---Ice Guard has been experimenting with a number of Tirolian Searchlight Drones they salvaged. In re-activating and reprogramming them, they’ve managed to somehow inculcate some of them with rather quirky subroutines...like conga-line dancing, tiptoe-stalking people around the base, or using their advanced sensors to peep on people in potentially compromising positions. Frankly, the mutant polar bears have come to HATE being interrupted at night by these things blinding them with their searchlight beams.

And it gets especially confusing during giant squid mating season, since they mistake the searchlight drones on the surface of the sea ice for the bioluminescence of potential mates.

Or better yet do some night hunting with the sreach light drones to draw the squids in close and nail the hell out of them with trank darts which is rether risky given the short rank of the dark guns in the harsh artic winds which means someone is going to have to get up close and ugly which the squids to trank them.

Either way, fishing for lunch at Ice Guard makes Most Dangerous Catch look like working an E-Z Bake Oven with adult supervision... :D

Can you iamgen what would happen if a bunch of Fremen got D-hopped to the Ice Guard and started breding with the Ice Gaurd and their crotch spawns?

They'd have to switch from melange to Flower of Life, given that sandworms would drown in the Arctic.

Also as I seem to recall in the books, Fremen tend to die of pneumonia, when they leave Dune.

Or get enraptured by ALL THAT WATER.
And the desert gets freezing cold at night, so Ice Guard would be perforce nocturnal if they ever visited Arrakis...

Not sure how much of this I can get away with....so I've carved away the hard-stats:

Third Generation Ice Guard Random Generation Chart:
Yep, it was inevitable; Ice Guard has kids.

Your Parents are:
01-25% 1st gen+1st gen; both your parents are Ice Guard veterans who found love on-base.
26-50% 1st gen+2nd gen; your parents are an old-timer IG veteran and a new arrival who found each other.
51-00% Both parents are 2nd gen(01-50% chance you came to Ice Guard as a child, 51-00% you were born on base)

Ice Guard Mutation Charts

“So...grow something new?”
“Very funny.”

As any veteran Ice Guard can tell you, there’s just something in the air that seems to affect the local animals in the post-Rain Arctic. What else can explain shape-shifting polar bears, giant gyrefalcons, sabertoothed seals, and especially norcas? Yeah, it’s joked about, but if the local wildlife have mutated so badly, why aren’t the humans as well? Well, they do:

*1st Generation Ice Guard----They’ve been around long enough, exposed to any mutagenic effects, that one would expect any mutations to appear in them. 15% chance of random mutation.

*2nd Generation Ice Guard---Most 2nd Genners have come late to the Deep North, so their exposure time isn’t as great; 5% chance of random mutation.

*3rd Generation Ice Guard---Because 3rd Genners either arrived at Ice Guard while they were still physically maturing, or were actually born there, they display the highest rate of mutation. 30% chance of random mutation.

Roll 1d4 times for the following:

01-50% Appearance
51-00% Environmental Adaptation

Appearance
01-25% Odd Skin Color(01-60% Paler than normal, 61-89% Light Blue, 90-00% Dark Blue)
26-50% Odd Eye Color(01-20% Paler than normal, 21-40% Pure White, 41-59% Gold, 61-89% Light Blue, 90-00% Dark Blue)
60-80% Odd Hair Color(01-40% Paler than normal, 41-59% Pure White, 61-89% Light Blue, 90-00% Dark Blue)
81-94% Extra-Abundant Body Hair---Has more than generous hair that reduces damage from cold by 25%.
95-00% Pronounced Canine Teeth---The mutant’s canine teeth are visibily larger and sharper; not enough to protrude fang-like from the mouth, but enough to give a killer smile.

Environmental Adaptation
01-10 % Haulass---The mutant has developed the ability to put on a cheetah-like burst of speed( +2d4x10 MPH) for 1 minute(4 melees) before requiring 3 minutes to cool down and rest up.
11-18% Flip-Leap---Years of jumping in sudden fear from snatching claws and snapping jaws have given the mutant the ability to perform a standing start leap of 3d4x10 ft +PS in ft, up/across.
19-24% Glare-Resistant Eyes---The eyes have adapted to bright glare to the point that the person is no longer susceptible to snow blindness, and is even resistant to the optical effects of flashbang grenades.
25-29% Acute Sense of Smell---Can smell trace contaminants(engine exhaust, grooveshark scat, Alvarez’s cooking, etc.) on the arctic wind with the acuity of a bloodhound.
30-34% Acute Sense of Hearing---Can hear the subsonic rumblings of an avalanche, or the high sonic whine of a homing grooveshark several miles away.
35-39% Extraordinary Sense of Balance---Years of slipping and slidding have given the mutant an improved ability to remain on their feet, even on the slickest of ice.
40-46% Animal Empathy---Can actually understand and command animals(GM option; this can be applicable to only SOME, or, very rarely, ALL mutant wildlife).
47-49% Danger Teleport---Beyond even haulingass and flip-leaping, the mutant can apparently teleport several dozen ft to avoid danger. Note: CANNOT teleport through solid matter, and is limited to performing this particular stunt their PE/2 per 24 hours.
50-54% Hold Breath---Can hold their breath for 4d6+P.E. minutes; ideal for surviving quick dips under the ice or being buried alive by an avalanche.
55-59% Foul Weather Sense---The mutant has developed a preternatural sensitivity to the weather, and can tell, with great accuracy, what the weather is going to be like in the next 1d6 hours.
60-64% Ironclad Mind---The IG has become so inured to insanity that they are effective proof against debilitating insanity, overplayed Christmas music, Horror Factor, boredom, and possession. NOTHING phazes these people.
65-69% Poison Resistance---Years of eating borderline toxic foods, and/or substance abuse, have given the person an acquired resistance to poisoning; ingested and injected toxins do HALF damage.
70-71% Poison Immunity---The person takes NO damage from ingested toxins, and even caustic agents like acid do HALF damage. Can eat lead-laced pemican without worry. On the minus side, the person’s tastebuds are probably(40% chance) shot to hell.
72-74% Perfect Direction Sense---Even in the middle of a white-out, with the compass needle going merry-go-round, the mutant knows his orientation and can find his way.
75-78% Hibernation Ability---The mutant is still susceptible to the debilitating effects of extreme cold, but lapses into a coma when frozen that prevents cell damage. The mutant can effectively be kept on ice until warmed up.
79-82% Vulnerability to Heat---Has an effective Immunity to Cold(takes NO damage), but is balanced by a susceptibility to heat(will feel increasingly uncomfortable in any temperature above 40 degrees F).
83-85% Cold Resistance(No heat vulnerability)---Takes HALF damage from cold.
86-88% Cold Immunity(No heat vulnerability)----Takes NO damage from cold. Can go naked in a -40 windchill after a quick dip in freezing brine.
89-91% Tough Skin---Beyond chapping, the mutant’s skin now is leathery tough, equivalent to a good suit of leather armor.
92-94% Strong Teeth---The mutant’s teeth have become tougher and stronger, and can now chew through even rock-hard-frozen meat, or bite a nail in two.
95-98% Life Sense---Can sense the bio-signs of life around oneself in a 500 ft radius, including the presence of predators and alien lifeforms
99-00% Weather Control---Equivalent to the Heroes Unlimited superpower Control Elemental Force: Air

Note: People with Poison Immunity can be discerned by the fact they actually LIKE Alvarez’s cooking.

Note[sup](1)[/sup]: Animal Empathy first observed in the case of Private Naomi Akina and the Norcas.

Note[sup](2)[/sup]: Hibernation Ability appears to be a genetic trait passed on by Leesa Segundo(or is it Sec? Or Dos? Or Tu? She can't quite remember herself). Her clone nature oddly makes her a Universal donor, and a number of injured IceGuard received transfusions from her before the aberration was detected.

Oh god, I just had a horrible idea: area of effect pepper-spray gas missiles using Alvarez's 'Insanity Peppers'....Kargan's speculated that Alvarez has access to a supply of/raises chili peppers so psychotropically 'hot' that they cause madness when digested....

"So you created a mutant Flower of Life, miss..Vearia?"
"Yes..no...it mutated spontaneously."
"And this concerns us how?"
"It has assumed human form. It has learned how to use tools."
"So we're likely to see it in the mess hall line one of these days."
"It will not be here to dine on Srgt. Alvarez's 'fine dining fare'. It craves human blood."
"...I'll get the high voltage lines lines out and rigged."
"Tell Alvarez we'll need to borrow his food processor. Big Chewy."

Meanwhile, on the other side of base, a husky slips into base and begins stalking one of the perimeter guards. It's moving closer to one when it hears a sound above it. It looks up just in time to see a long-tailed shape atop a rooftop before a large ovoid eclipses its view and slides down its unusually wide mouth.
A moment later a small sun blooms on the ice as the not-a-husky is completely vaporized.
Thunder rolls across the base.
"TWITCH!!!! WHAT DID WE TELL YOU ABOUT LEAVING BOOBY-TRAPS LYING AROUND???!!!"

Note to all following this thread, I have a rough draft of the Ice Guard stated out for game play, since there are rules against posting stats in this sub-forum and that there is some what unsuitable content for posting the Ice Guard stats here, PM me with your e-mail addy and I'll send the doc to you, not it is a work in progress and is not completed but it can be used for game play.

It's fuel-ethanol with a vodka chaser, both of which are readily available at Ice Guard(the latter much to the EBSIS's frustration since a) the Ice Guard haven't yet succumbed to alcohol poisoning as planned, and b) the bastards keep swiping the EBSIS's own stocks).

nah, ethonol with vodka is still only 100% alcohol.

hyperspatial vodka, with a third of the alcohol molecules extending right angles to timespace? non-euclidian geometry molecules? who knows.. no matter what, sounds like the kind of thing you could drink with Klatchian coffee and still get drunk. or perhaps something so alcoholic you pass right through drunk and back around to sobriety..

nah, ethonol with vodka is still only 100% alcohol.

TimeTraveling vodka....starts entering your bloodstream and getting you drunk before you open the bottle. Lowers your inhibitions and your commonsense NOT to start drinking because paradox compels you to commence drinking.

SLMH-Powered Energy Gunpods
(aka ‘Slam-Guns’)
The development of a cleaner and more efficient way of producing semi-liquid metallic hydrogen(SLMH) by Ice Guard led to experimentation in an number of other fields, using SLMH as a power source. Mecha armament was one of them.
IG engineers had long been grafting energy weapons to platforms not originally designed for them, but available power had always been an issue. Unless directly powered by a Protoculture powerplant, such add-ons tended to be low damage types(so as not to tax the powerplant) or capacitator-powered, with a slow-recharge rate.
One alternative experimented with was an SLMH fuel cell power system, providing power for higher-powered weapons discharges, similar to earlier chemical lasers. ‘SLMH-Guns’ could discharge more powerful power pulses than capacitator systems, and arguably could be refueled faster than the trickle recharge rate of battery units. In a pinch, SLMH-fueled mecha could even siphon off their fuel reserves to recharge their weapons pods. A gunpod SLMH fuel cell typically had enough fuel for 30-50 high-powered shots/bursts before needing recharging. To make the most of this system, IG engineers selected weapons types with particularly high damage per shot potential; refurbished Regult Particle Beams, Glaug Forearm Particle Beams, EU-12 Heavy Particle Beams, but also Bioroid Weapons Drums were among those types so converted. Towards the end of the Occupation period, the IG was even experimenting with recharging HPC-40 Particle Beams and EU-15 Destabilizer Cannons they’d salvaged.
SLMH-powered energy weapon pods are not without their shortcomings, of course. Besides the still-limited number of shots, the weapons housings tended to be large; comparable in size to the old GU-11 gunpod, complete with attached cooling fins. A lucky hit on the gunpod could also breach the SLMH’s containment, resulting in depressurization of the storage cell, and suddenly shrouding the mecha holding the gunpod in cryogenic vapor.
‘SLMH-Guns’ remained a quirky technology of Ice Guard, seeing little deployment outside their ranks, but the technology served them well, allowing their units to operate longer without protoculture resupply.

Now we know how the Ice Guard manged to stay so well funded for so many years.

With the Ice Guard they give a whole new meaning to the term " Copper Head Road. "

Well, the Soviet Tu-22 'Blinder' attack bomber was known to its ground crews as the 'booze truck' or 'booze carrier' because as part of its onboard de-icing systems, it carried a tank of nearly 120 gallons of pure grain alcohol... top-off supplies of which were supposedly tapped and diluted for personal consumption by base personnel.
So when they're not getting senselessly slaughtered in yet another ill-advised show of force against Ice Guard, the (Eastern) EBSIS opposite numbers are probably getting embalmed on anti-freeze.

LOL

And come Christmas eve/day/new years eve both the Ice Guard and the E.B.S.I.S version of the Ice Guard would put aside their *diffrences* and get together for some holiday cheer, gift giving and a little druken hunting of the mutant critters which would lead to deffections, marriages, divorices and quite a few issues of questional paternity.

So they have a Joyeux Noël moment(s)?. The Time Skip can thus result in some of the separated parents fast-forwarding a few years to meet their older (and previously unknown) offspring. Or renew their 'snow blind' love affairs(with one member being that much younger). Eww-wheee...

Well given the mind numbingly random insanity in the Ice Guards most of the Ice Guards would take this with a shovel load of salt or large amouts of booze or both and go about things as ususal.

Undoubtly anyone trying to do a geneological study on the Ice Guard would most likely give up after the first generation.

As a result of the DNA still mutating and refusing to be fixed and pinned down to a set value DURING the sequencing.

You know given the high mutabilty of the Ice Guard DNA I would have to wonder if you would be considered a genetic Holy Grail or a Genetic Doomsday weapon, I'm sure the Genesplicers would have a few moments of confusion before they used it as a vital componet in their experments or as a lethaly terriying bioweapon.

Good point, after the time skip and the Invid leaving the Earth I wonder how the Ice Guard would react to the Haydonites lurking around the old homestead, most likely they would see the Haydo's as a bit of skeet shooting, spare parts for some kit bashing.

Well, the outed Invid among the IG would talk up the Big Bad Haydonites as cosmic boogiemen, which the Haydonites, not knowing the IG's lack of up-to-dateness, would prove it by opening fire on the humans and the Invid alike. Cue metal-murderthon on the ice.

You make a very good point, for some reason I have always thought of the Haydo's as Floaters of the updated X-com, basicly one big ass target, if the RT powers that be were trying to make the Haydo's as the new Big Bad Guys, they failed but who knows maybe when the next RT flick comes out there will be some more info on them.

Yeah, Haydonites are basically presented as much sneakier and less cuddlesome versions of the NuBSG Cylons, though their weaponry is arguably more advanced in that they apparently have the technology to build singularity bombs(or rather, advise others on how to build them). Apparently, though, they're weak enough(or perhaps constrained by some code of behavior) that they have to trick the 'protoculture addicts' into offing themselves/each other, rather than plow in and deliver the killshot themselves, directly. Bombing the snot out of the original Invid homeworld seems to be the exception(or maybe they conned another group of dupes into doing it for them).

Good point but acording to RT Cannon it was the Masters that nuked the Invid home world in order to keep the FOL/Protoculture for themselves and at the time of the main RT Cannon the Haydo's where nowhere to be seen, so until the next RT flick with more info on the Haydo's the RT cannon is going to be right messed up until the RT powers that be rehash the RT cannon for the new info/metrials based on what they are doing with the Haydo's

the invid seem to have had 2 homeworlds..

their first one was destroyed by the haydonites.. probably with a singularity weapon.

the invid that escaped that apparently settled Optera, and became the invid the master's encountered. then the master's destroyed Optera (most likely with the first zentraedi fleets)

it's implicit in the dialog of shadow chronciles, where the regis talks about the shadows destroying the invid original homeworld.

and the fact thwe regis recognizes the nuetron-S missile warheads indicates that she is familiar with the haydonite singularity weapons.

Ahh, good point which plays all sorts of hell with the pre SC cannon, like I said until we get more info on the Haydo's as well as the Invid and Masters the RT cannon is right messed up given the can of worms that SC has opened.
