there is the stage magician and I think he is buried in a rifter somewhere. I know I have read him. He does magic but uses gadgets and stage tricks to make it look real. If I remember correctly it's all about smoke and mirrors quite literally so none of the magic does the actual effect. ie, globe of daylight does light up a room but will not keep vamps at bay etc. etc.

No, the one I'm thinking of literally uses technology to mimic the magic effects of most common spells.

Ok, I don't know what you are thinking of, but that sounds almost verbatum part of the description of the Stage Magician

I may have imagined it, but it was a Rifts class, and it gave examples of using hidden flame thrower to mimic spells like fire bolt, they literally try to pass off as common Rifts magic-users, but have no magic abilities. Seriously, I'm looking through the list of OCCs in the GMG and can't find it. Maybe a Rifter?

No that's definatly the stage magician, it's in a Rifter, but I can't remember which one, and it's not in 1-44, 50-52, which are all the ones I have access to at the moment. I just checked their tables of content so I could be wrong...lol

Perhaps you're thinking of A.R.C.H.I.E. 3's robot mage, can't remember which rifter it's in but it's likely one of the early ones... might even be one of the rare official ones.

No, that's definatly not the one I'm thinking of...because I know it was either called Stage Magician OCC or at least the magic was called "Stage Magic" and it was all about what magic is today. Tricking people into beleiving the character was mystical when all he was really doing was using a lighter and a ballpoint pen and McGyvering his way into magic
However if I remember correctly most of the "spells" couldn't mimic their counterparts perfectly in such that they couldn't do MD...I think. It's been a while. However I am ALMOST 98% sure that it's not a robot mage. I thought it was a full blooded human just trying to get shot by the CS :P

the analytical specialist has a % to duplicate any machine it analyzes so using this existing class as a base just tweak few skills add in an ancient language translator skill and a % to duplicate spells with technological device and most of the "leg work" has already been done. so instead of the make/modify armor skill the duplicate spell skill replaces it. sort of a hardware:magical research specialist.

for the standard specialistits a -95% penalty but they can create anything. power armor energy weapons, etc. so trade the armor skill for the spell skill and your good. i would limit the ability as such items built cast as equal level to the builder. i.e.,3rd level magic specialists "fireball" ring is equal power to a third level fireball cast by a mage occ.

Stage Magician....Is a special training power cat. from HU.
There is a Prestidigitator class in the PF High Seas book.

Someone Who Builds Items that make supernatural effects....is a Super Invention Inventor (a subset of the super invention power cat)...which is a variant of a Hardware Power Cat from HU.

abe wrote:This class COULD probably duplicate the magical effect of ANY magic-using occ out there.(maybe)

nope
it can not

Only those that produce a physical effect such as producing a fireball, or having an electrical blast.

the fact is is the purposed class is very much limited in what fax-spells it can make.
even if the char could produce non-physical effect they would have to specialize in spells based around that type of effect. Because of the very specialize learning it would take to produce that effect.

Rifter #53 Dan Sutton's article on Archie 3 and faux magic...he lays out the means of faking Create Mummy, Create Zombie using a nanotech-implanted powered endoskeleton, Control Rodents through pheromones and sonic lures, Wind Rush with compressed air jets, Agony with microwave beams, etc....

Hate to say it, after the work you've already put into it, but I really can't see how this OCC can't already be filled by a sufficiently skilled(and obsessed) Operator, Gizmoteer, or Natural Genius with Lore: Magic and a suitably large budget.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic": a flashlight or a cellphone would appear as miraculous to a neolithic people who'd never previously encountered applied electricity or radio.
