Think of this as a spin-off thread of the "what books have you used..." thread.
Back in the day, the single most heavily used non-Palladium reference that we used was the Rand McNally Road Atlas.

I don't care about canon answers. I'm interested in good, well-reasoned answers and, perhaps, a short discussion of how that answer is supported or contradicted by canon.
If I don't provide a book and page number, then don't assume that I'm describing canon. I'll tell you if I'm describing canon.

YES!!! (Or Google Maps today)
D&D 3.5's Heroes of Battles have superb rules for setting up large scale conflicts that allows your characters to influence by using a flow chart to map out the flow of the battle and each important moment (taking a bridge, holding a choke point, etc.) is where the flow of the battle can shift.
Maps of dungeons and towns and the like are also real good to use.

World Book Encyclopedia...especially the U.S. state topographical and resource maps.

Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"
