I'd need to know more about the source.

romainan legend (I think the source is Romanian anyway, see Wikipedia for details for witch country the legend is from, but basically the story is that when pumpkins or watermelons are left on the vine past the time of ripeness they detach on their own & roll around and cause mischief, anyway I think that's the story about the vampire pumpkins and watermelons.)

i have heard of this, though i think i would treat it differently than a vampire (find out the romani 'cure' maybe) failing that i think they'd still rot
maybe though you could explain it away with some D-bee pests getting into them and causing them to move as they eat the insides/metomorph from the larva stage

or maybe some fairy magic? rolling them around for fun or for some reason because the people didn't harvest when they should have
i own but am less well versed in RUE, and my memory is ... lackluster at best keep that in mind if my posts contradict canon lol

In BTS, a good catch all for legends like that is the Tectonic Entity, in this case, one that likes to inhabit over-ripe or rotting vegetation, but other entities like Poltergeists do a good job for this as well. In RIFTS, if anything, this kind of occurrence should be much more common, with so many more entities around.

The Beast would not fine people who waste their magic on sending vampiric fruit through rifts. Instead The Beast would kill such individuals and use their souls to grow more powerful.

for vampire veggies, i'd go with the Psi or PPE vampire approach, and the bloodletting be purely coincidental. after all, it would be very very hard to draw blood if your a watermelon. i'd also have it be a special spirit, not a normal tectonic entity.. mainly because the idea is that each melon has gone vampiric and shuffles around on the vines.. a tectonic entity would make its vaguely humanoid body out of a whole field at once.

besides, it would get a more interesting reaction from players.

There's been a Wikipedia article on it since December 2003 so the legend's been on the internet at least 11 years.

I'd give them a very light MDC shell (like just 1D4 points, or maybe even 1D4x100 SDC instead) but make the inner pulp a natural explosive that inflicts 2D6 MD (per pound) when the shell is broken. You could even have a little cottage industry of folks who harvest them for the explosive material.

Imagine waking up the in the morning to find that 10 pounds of explosives had rolled up next to your tent during the night.
