Digidrax(NPC)
A while ago, there was some discussion of Industrial Dragons and bionics for dragons.
Well, here's my much-delayed take on that...
Digidrax---The Cyberdragon
http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp164/taalismn/img207copy.jpg
The gift was unexpected. Shinji had been called in the middle of the night to the dark abandoned warehouse. He’d learned that when called, he was expected to come, regardless of what he was doing or who he was with. Otherwise, the being who had called him would come looking for him, and THAT was to be avoided, if at all possible.
HOW his sometimes acquaintance/employer/tormentor was able to come and go from the place unseen, let alone sneak up on him, was unknown to the young man. Even as he fought to get his breathing and pulse rate back down to something like calm, he allowed himself a moment to marvel at the massive conglomeration of myth and machinery that loomed over him from the darkness.
“As you have helped me acquire a certain useful little trinket; a small boon I grant you.”
The massive left arm emerged from the towering mobile mass of technology above him, its great length sliding open, the great paw descending towards him, armored fingers scizzoring open like a giant metallic flower, to reveal a circular palm like a stage, upon which was revealed...
Shinji felt his throat choke up as he recognized the pale, unconscious form laid out across the illuminated palm-dias...he’d seen her die...seen her ripped apart and vaporized by the neutronium disruptor munitions the WorldCom forces had been using those months ago when they had seen fit to seek to destroy the very laboratory complex they had helped finance, and exterminate those who had been employed there....yet, here was his sister, alive.
High above him, cyperoptic arrays scrutinized his face and every emotional nuance that played across it. A rumbling, multi-toned vocal synthesizer roared in answer to the young man’s unspoken question.
“Of course I was able to clone her body, and resurrect her memories from the time of her death...You think that a miracle? Mere application of my research; it was easy to adapt the techniques to you simple lifeforms...hardly more complicated than cloning a sponge!”
“Release me at once, you foul serpent! You monsterous wyrm! Your assaults on my dignity avail you not, for know that I a-*Muphf!*”
“’Captain Phoenix’, yes, yes, I know. And it is precisely that regenerative ability and your supposed blood descent from the bird of legend that so interests me. Now quit squirming, or this bone marrow biopsy will be a LOT more painful than it absolutely has to be!”
The entity known as Digidrax seems a contradiction and an impossibility in terms to those familiar with the relationship(or lack of) between magic and bionics---a bionic conversion dragon. To the cult of Dragonwright, Digidrax is an abomination, a despoiling of the perfection that is dragonkind. To others, especially other dragons, who have heard tales of the cyberdragon, Digidrax is a myth, or at worst a pretender, a mortal worm pretending to dragonhood. Even those who know better see Digidrax as an object of pathos and pity, one who has fallen from the near godhood of being a dragon, to being a lurker in the shadows, the glory that was hidden beneath layers of scar and metal-ceramic. The wise see Digidrax as proof that Dragonkind are not invincible, and those who believe themselves divinity cast in draconic form, should see Digidrax as what they might become, in their arrogance.
The truth is that Digidrax IS real, and his history is a tragic one. Digidrax was once known as Alysreth, a young Great Horned Dragon and Champion of the Light, who defended an idyllic world in a far universe. Idyllic, until it fell into the cross hairs of a marauding cybernetic pack of monsters; the Mechanoids! The alien despoilers fell upon Alysreth’s world like a ravening metal-clad horde, destroying and ruthlessly strip-mining all before them. Alysreth rushed to the defense of his world, and put up a valiant defense against the invaders, but his efforts were too little to stem the alien metal tide. The idyllic paradise fell, and all in it became the spoils of its conquerers. Taken by surprise by the Mechanoid invaders who had never before seen such a creature, the young dragon was subjected to prolonged and excruciating physical study. Because of his incredible regenerative and shapeshifting abilities, the young champion was vivisected, time and time again, implanted with probes and monitors, and then allowed to heal again, when the process would begin again. In time, even a dragon’s phenomenal healing ability was taxed to its limit and surpassed, but still, the experiments went on.
Alysreth was at the end of his strength and sanity, convinced he would either die or lose all sanity when the Mechanoids’ experiments were permanently interrupted; their research facility was discovered by an unknown enemy who attacked with overwhelming force. The Mechanoids and their torturously-acquired research were obliterated in the massive attack, but before the whole of the complex could be vaporized, the caging system that held its chief specimen captive was deactivated, and the prisoner was able to claw his way out to safety commandeering the movement controls of the experiment stage/life support pallet/torture rack he was bound to, apparently overlooked in the fury of battle.
Though now free, the dragon was certainly not the same as he was before; the half-century of torture had left its effects. The Mechanoids’ clumsy, and invasive, attempts to understand the dragon’s magic physiology had all but completely burned out those same abilities. His life was kept from slipping away by extensive artificial life support systems. Just enough of the phenomenal draconic regenerative ability remained to insure that Alysreth could not die as long as his central nervous system remained intact, but he could no longer re-grow his lost limbs.....in his own eyes, the once proud dragon had been reduced to a limbless worm in an elaborate prosthetic wheelchair.
A lesser creature of magic might have given up at that point, having lost what made it supernatural, and committed suicide. This young dragon did not...by sheer force of will, he survived, but was forever mentally scarred. In the pain of torture the champion-dragon had died, a new being was born in its place. No longer would Alysreth fly high along the dragon-lines of the Megaverse; now Digidrax clawed and clanked from the ashes!
Digidrax’s magical abilities might be all but gone, but not his knowledge, nor his lust to learn. Digidrax has committed himself to learning all he can about the technology keeping him together, the science of healing, and what magicks look promising towards advancing his goal; to one day restore himself to his former draconic glory. In the process, Digidrax has become an expert in cybernetics, bionics(and to a lesser degree, robotics), and medical technology. No longer able to rely on inherent draconic abilities and powers, Digidrax has concentrated on exercising his mind, learning skills with a rapacity he might have devoted to acquiring treasure or magic. He has also made considerable modifications to his bionic chassis and its capabilities, initially to sustain his life, but later to protect himself and facilitate his research.
Digidrax is thus obsessed with learning and acquiring any magic and technology that looks promising; cloning, resurrection magic, regeneration drugs, healing waters, restoration spells, and nanotech. So far, nothing he’s found has been of any use to him; it either doesn’t affect his warped biology, or else it has unpleasant side-effects, such as producing a copy of him, while leaving his true essence/memories still trapped in his bionic body. By no means will he undertake any procedure that benefits him at the expense of others, such as brain transplant/transference into another’s body, but that hasn’t stopped him, either, from stooping to kidnapping other lifeforms for their knowledge, or in order to study their biology/genetic makeup(make collect cell samples, perform extensive examinations and monitoring experiments, but will not torture or seek to change them in any way). He has made a great number of breakthroughs in medicine applicable to other species in the process, some of which, with his extreme mood swings, he has sold at great expense to the market, in order to fund his research, and other times he has given away for free. Nothing he has found yet, though, has been of substantial help to restoring him to his former full draconic glory.
Digidrax is a dimensional wanderer, a rogue who can be a hero, a villian, a secret benefactor, or a secret nemesis, depending on the circumstances. He is known to hire others to acquire items of interest to him, from collecting genetic samples to stealing secret technology. In the process, though, he has probably become the foremost expert on dragon genetic structure, and the possessor of a vast body of knowledge that beings such as the GeneSplicers would KILL to possess(although Digidrax has been intrigued by reports of the Genesplicers and their capabilities, he has also learned enough to know that asking them for help with his problem is inviting them to make him as much their guinea pig as the Mechanoids did, something the dragon is NOT going to allow).
Level of Experience: 15th level Rogue Scientist equivalent(was a 5th level Dragon at the time of his capture and conversion)
Rank: Mad Scientist
Race: Great Horned Dragon(Full Conversion Cyborg)
Alignment: Anarchist
Land of Origin: Unknown
Age: 500 years old
Sex: Male
Length: 46 ft main body, plus another 40 ft of tail
Width: 30 ft at shoulders, plus arms/wings can extend out another 50 ft either side
Height: 15 ft tall at shoulder; head can stretch up another 20 ft
Weight: 75 tons
Physical Description/Appearance:
A massive battleship-gray bionic dragon, carried on four tread units, each as big as a main battle tank, two large forelimbs that split into multiple tool and combat arms of varying sizes, a long metal tail ending in an arm/weapon cluster, and a set of articulated wings with embedded missile launchers, jet engines, and anti-grav generators. Two large concealed compartments open up out the main body’s flanks for the storage of experiment canisters. The back of the neck and head are covered in interface plugs, cybercables, and antennae mounts. The eyes are covered by a sensor-array visor. What little remains visible of his natural flesh is thick wth scar tissue, raised ridges of discolored calcification, and darkened red-black scale(normally would be a healthy glowing red-gold).
As much as his current state offends him, Digidrax has continued to modify his bionic body, in crude efforts to gain some of what he lost, the better to survive the unwlecome attentions of those who would destroy him or hinder his research. Turbothrusters and multiple limbs replace the wings and agility that were once his, neural headjacks, telemechanical modems, and psycho-scramblers fill in for the powers of the mind since burned out, and skill-based invention is forced to substitute for the magic he once commanded.
In many ways, the Mechanoids have made Digidrax a Mechanoid.
Disposition:
Cold, aloof, and quiet. He suffers fools not gladly, and more often than not shuns socializing, or even acknowledging the existence of others around him. Appears more preoccupied with more important matters most of the time, such as ongoing experiments, sample analysis, and other scientific matters.
Prone to mercurial swings of temper. At times he can be incredibly generous, sharing his knowledge and expertise, and doing small(or great) acts of kindness(though he will explain this away as a minor exercise of his power, or the use of something that was of little use to him anyway), while other times he is moody and dangerous, liable to lash out and/or threaten those who bother him(including getting in his way or hindering his research). The continuing failure of his ability to find a cure for his condition, in spite of his best efforts, is a constant source of frustration for him.
However, Digidrax will do just about anything to get ahold of a new magic or technology that holds promise in his quest to restore himself; if he can’t copy it or buy it, he’ll steal it(or hire somebody else to do it for him)....even if it means ruining another’s livelihood or doing them injury, if Digidrax is desperate enough. He will stoop to kidnap, and study another being with little regard to that being’s sensibilities(think alien abduction), but he will stop short of torture, or deliberately inflicting pain....once he has completed his studies, he releases his prisoner(s), sometimes with an apology and some form of recompense, or else with not a word of thanks(depending on what, if anything, Digidrax’s studies turned up).
Digidrax is also fairly contemptuous of other dragons; early in his recovery, he sought help from other dragonkin, and they snubbed him badly. The contempt and indifference with which he was treated has left Digidrax with bitter memories and an ill-regard for the haughty arrogance of his own kind(even as he exhibits it himself in his treatment of others).
Insanities:
*Obsession:Dragon Identity---Digidrax is obsessed with retaining/asserting his identity as a dragon. Anyone who publically doubts his identity as a dragon will earn the cyberdragon’s anger, be it an immediate slapdown or a long grudge with later vengeance(humiliation).
*Obsession: Acquiring Restoration Magic/Technology---Either in person or via proxies, Digidrax will pursue the acquisition of restoration/healing magic/technology, by purchase or outright theft, if that’s what it takes.
*Rage: Mechanoids----Digidrax HATES HATES HATES the Mechanoids; even AbM Mechanoids will be subjected to his vengeance. Besides studying ways to restore himself, Digidrax has also committed himself to finding out as much as he can about Mechanoid technology, and thus discovering their weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
Friends/Allies:
Digidrax has few real friends/peers; he distrusts most of his own kind, but he has earned the gratitude of a number of lesser beings who owe him for the cures and medical miracles he has given them; a few have begun to assist him in his search. Digidrax also has the respect of several societies of mad scientists, most of whom fail to realize that the face behind the many brilliant discoveries submitted to them for peer review, and who has subscribed to their newsletters, is a dragon.
Digidrax also has a list of various proxies and flunkies who have unknowingly worked for the dragon over the years; people who either can go places the giant cyborg cannot, or have skills Digidrax lacks(thieves, computer hackers, confidence men, etc.), and who can be contacted and persuaded to do additional work, either through payment or the application of blackmail.
Enemies:
The Mechanoids, first and foremost. The Cult of Dragonwright also refuses to acknowledge Digidrax as a true dragon, and most members of the self-serving cult would kill him as a pretender. Digidrax would cheerfully return the favor, seeing them as little better than hyprocrites, for all their talk of ‘dragon solidarity’. Also has a number of cults and scientific establishments/medical companies after him for his theft/acquisition of various artifacts and technologies. Several individuals, a few superbeings among them, also regard him as a villian, for their abduction and/or treatment at his hands. The Genesplicers and GeneTech, if they learn of Digidrax, might also take an unhealthy interest in acquiring what the dragon has learmed and acquired.

*Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body will effectively destroy the artificial body, but emergency systems will keep Digidrax’s brain and vital organs alive for 48 hours. Recovery of the severely damaged body will enable doctors to place the character on life support systems that will keep him alive until a new bionic body (same style or other) is
available, for full conversion. Failure to find the damaged Borg within 48 hours means the character dies.
Digidrax typically has programmed his retinue of robotic assistants to grab his brain case in an emergency and carry it away, if possible, to where he has a back-up body and automated repair systems ready to re-install him(he hates the idea, but considers it a necessary last resort).
Horror Factor: 14
Special Abilities/Characteristics/Powers:
(See Bionics)
Magic: None; all that remains of Alysreth’s magic potential is memories.
Psionics: None
Powerplant:
Digidrax’s bionic chassis is powered by a micro-fusion nuclear core. Digidrax also salvages Mechanoid power crystals(from their corpses) to boost the power of special equipment and experiment gear. His flesh itself is maintained by various chemical treatments and synthesized nutrients(Digidrax has experimented with various PPE-rich substrates, including Xiticix brood-goo). All told, Digidrax has enough onboard power and nutrients for at least fifty years of continuous running.

Notable Possessions/Equipment:
In the course of his work, Digidrax has acquired a large amount of material that would be very respectable for a dragon’s hoard, save that Digidrax has concentrated on medical equipment and scientific gear(several BILLION credits worth). Anyone inventorying his collection will discover such wonders as a (working) Gene Chamber, two Rune Swords, several dozen scrolls of healing, several dozen healing potions, a half-dozen Regeneration Chambers, a complete mobile bionics laboratory and robotics workshop, a field laboratory with freezer trailer, millions of genetic specimens and biological samples held in file, as well as more than a few lifeforms(including one or two sentient ones) held in stasis for study.
Digidrax also has tons of material relating to draconid medicine, including several cultures of Atlantean microbes(he figures if he knows what makes dragons ILL, he can also figure out what heals them).
Digidrax typically has a ‘retinue’ of about a dozen labor robots to assist him. These are roughly equal to the Triax DV-12 Dyna-Bot.
Digidrax’s transport vehicle of choice is a modified light freighter of Three Galaxies’ origin, rigged out for remote control so Digidrax can summon it whenever he needs or it, or can monitor experiments aboard it even when he’s not on it. The vessel sports an interdimensional jump drive that Digidrax acquired from somewhere(the drive alone would make the ship a target of potential hijackers alone if anybody knew of it).
Note: Alysru---One of Digidrax’s efforts to cure his condition was to clone himself a new body in hopes of transferring his intelligence into it. The experiment was a partial success; he DID produce a perfectly healthy younger copy of himself(perhaps the only successful cloning of a dragon anywhere in the Megaverse), but the effort to migrate his consciousness failed; the process transferred a COPY of his mind and memories into the younger body, leaving Digidrax still trapped in his bionic body and feeling betrayed by his hopes of finally restoring himself. Perhaps out of jealousy, fear, annoyance, or a warped sense of compassion, Digidrax bruteforce-erased the younger dragon’s memories of being Digidrax(as well as much of his memory of being Alysreth) and left the younger dragon on a peaceful enough planet, while Digidrax continued on his quest for a cure. In true draconic fashion, he has neither looked back nor taken any further interest in his ‘offspring’.
Recovering from his brain-scrambling, the young dragon, calling himself ‘Alysru’, has only vague recollections of his ‘parent’, and has continued on his own way in life.
Well, here's my much-delayed take on that...

*Fine Manipulation Armatures(6)---These are smaller, pipe-like arms ending in precision tool hands, used for handling fine laboratory work and technical repairs. Each hand has a 20 ft reach, Robotic P.S. of 16, a laser wand tool/torch(10 ft range, 1d4-3d6 SDC), and an electrical prod(Light Prod: 1d4 SDC/HP, Moderate Prod: 2d6 SDC/HP, Lethal Zap: 5d6 SDC/HP, plus 01-33% chance of stunning humans, D-bees, and small animals for 1d4 melees, 01-33% against large or inhumanly strong/powerful animals. A successful save means victim takes HALF damage and only lose initiative and one APM. Stun means -6 to strike, dodge, and parry, plus reduce APMs and Speed by HALF. Being shocked on the strong/lethal setting for more than 5 times, or once the victim's Hit Points drop below half, means they are knocked unconscious for 2d4 melees. Chance of cardiac arrest as detailed in Rifts: Lone Star, pg. 50. Ineffective against EBA, power armor, 'bots, and 'borgs.).
