APS electricity and grounding yourself question.

Unread post by SittingBull »

What would one have to do to ground oneself (to protect oneself) against a villain with aps electricity? Would grounding still be possible if the person, seeking protection, had metal (unbreakable) bones?

Thank you

Ha I just two days ago had a First Responder Training put on by PG&E and one thing they went over was grounding, electricity and such. We watched a bunch of horrible videos showing First Responders and Civilians being killed in nasty ways from arcing electricity ect.

Short answer to your question: Probably not in regard to grounding if its powerful Electricity attack. If you have stomach for it see Videos on Arc Flash death. Or better yet don't and just go with no for grounding.

Protection? "Super" Rubber Shoes. Multiple layers of rubber gloves ect....

Well there is the electrical aura that does 4d6 whenever someone touches the villain (I made aps electricity more like aps fire), that did the most damage to the hero in their first encounter but the villain does have a 1d6x10+2 per level attack he can use. Maybe if he can be grounded against the 4d6 but not the 1d6x10+2 per level attack?

Its your game, and that sounds fair for the Players.

Just make sure the Players under attack put their feet together and hop away from this villain :)

Keeping your feet together and either shuffling away without breaking contact of your feet or hopping supposedly is a way to keep grounded - that's all I meant :)

So you can be grounded in mid-air?

Yes. Feet together.

When the ground is energized you want to shuffle or hop away:

•Jump with your feet together

•Hop or shuffle out of the area

In this case, away from your Electro-villain.

The LAST thing you want to be is grounded when struck by electricity, because you definitely do NOT want to be giving it a path to follow through you you want it going anywhere but where you are. What you want is to be as insulated as possible so the current has no where to go (at least not in regards to going through you). If you were going to have to deal with being shocked you'd want something that would ensure that the current's path was across your skin rather than through you, say by having a conductive mesh or harness around you to divert the current around you (something I once saw in a short sci-fi story once, a world where EVERYONE was inflicted by the medical profession with one or more phobias that were 'treated' with crutches which for the lightning-phobic meant having a super-conductive harness with a trailing ground strip to ensure you could be hit by lightning without injury).
Fair warning: I consider being called a munchkin a highly offensive slur and do report people when they err in doing so.

'Reality is very disappointing.' - Jonathan Switcher from Mannequin

It's 'canon', not 'cannon'. A cannon is a big gun like on pirate ships, canon is what you mean when referring to something as being contained within one of the books such as how many dice to roll for a stat.

I know this might sound funny but would all those copper lined braces and form fitting pieces of clothing count as insulated? (What is it called Tommy Copper?)

Electricity, I actually know this :) yay!!

for roadside voltage of 23kv requires roughly 1/4" thick rubber guantlets, fiberglass tools and an insulated bucket. Irl.

Now lets game it...
Add in rubberized coating to armor, roughly 25 lbs to weight. Since not touching the ground isn't an option use at least 4" thick rubber boots another 20lbs.
The rubber gives lets say AR:18 vs Electricity but suffers double damage from fire attacks and loses AR.

Roadside voltage?

Could what you suggested, modifying ones armor, be done by a layman limited by today's technology?

The powerlines along the side of the road, 23,000 volts. The little lines.

Yes, also Kevlar armor made from chainsaw chaps thinner and fiberglAss.

Another question. Could someone just go to one of the manufacturers of the heavy duty insulator clothes, like power companies use, and buy some?

No, but a stealth mission on a utility company yard would yield all necessary equipment...

Well stealth mission isn't an option for the Hero; can't be stealing stuff as a Hero.

Grounding oneself is how you get hurt when handling electricity.

Insulating boots and clothes (including gloves and head gear) and a lighting rod and a grounding chain attached the rod. And talking to the GM to Tell him what you are doing.

Yes I was corrected, earlier in the thread, to go for insulating not grounding. Thank you Drew.

Would these heavy duty insulation items be something you could find on Ebay or online for sale?

What would industrial strength insulation boots and gloves run? Or if there is more than boots and gloves, price for that then?
