And for my next trick... New character need suggestions.

Unread post by The Artist Formerly »

So we've been playing D&D 3.5 but we've kind of got the feel for some more HU.

We're playing a SECTOR team of super humans. Set in Los Angles during the early 90s. I'm working on a super soldier with two major abilities. Background I am working from was a small time criminal mutant. Was doing time, got offered a job with the government and a powers upgrade. I rolled twice on the unusual characteristic table (volunteered for it, in fact, looking for some weird). I roll unusual eyes, yay (glowing white) and ambidexterity(crap roll, I tossed it). I'm just going to wear sunglasses and a trench coat, to be the ponceyest ponce to ever ponce past a ponce parlor as Yahtzee once put it. Also, it's LA.

I rolled two major powers (actually, first I rolled the cyber body endo-skeleton, but someone else called that for their character build, so I rolled again). Four super soldier enhancements as well. 3d6 down the line (usually go arrange to taste, but I just went for it)

IQ:8 ME:13 MA:22 PS:9 PP:10 PE:9 PB:15 SPD:12

I'm concerned about IQ, so I'm buying the brain boost upgrade. Plus mutant background, that pushes IQ to 20, PS to 11 and PP to 12

I rolled the mil specialist education level.

Plus I'm thinking about sacrificing my special vehicle, my special weapon, one of super soldier options, down grading my skill package to the basic mil package, and that ambidexterity roll that I tossed as a trade in for a minor power. That looks like it will work and give the skele-replacement character a better way to define himself compared to me. Sounds like he'll take picks that he can build into his frame as special abilities.

Looks like the third character will be an symbiotic character (alien implant or something) with APS Mercury and adhesion. Might be a fourth character, something with APS Electricity or some such or maybe special invention tech build.

I kind of want to screw around with force or gravity. Looking at my stats, I don't want to melee. With no exceptional physical stats, I'm going to have to blow a whole skill program on physical skills to get into that kind of build, and kind of don't want to. Mercury is great for chopping people up, and I don't need to.

I must be able to fly. It doesn't have to be mega fast or anything, but I must fly, because that's just cool. Also don't want to carry a gun either. I've got 70 SDC to start with. Hit me with your thoughts.

You'd be able to fly, though not mega fast or anything, by screwing around with Gravity Manipulation: a power that gives you ways to incapacitate folks at range without bothering to draw a gun. And since your physical stats discourage melee, and you don't want to buy physical skills, why not simply take Invulnerability to shrug off attacks like a superhero?

Plus I'm thinking about sacrificing my special vehicle, my special weapon, one of super soldier options, down grading my skill package to the basic mil package, and that ambidexterity roll that I tossed as a trade in for a minor power. I'm a big fan of Vocalization in general -- and doubly so since it sounds like none of your teammates are taking mind-control powers.

I second Gravity Manipulation. Here's a few other powers that may work for the second Major power: Distort Space, Gateways, Portals (Armageddon Unlimited version preferred over the PU3 version), Gravity Waves.

Create Force Constructs
Create Force Fields
and for the minor, EO PE

You get your force powers
you get to fly
with your intellect [real life and the PC], you would be like a swiss army knife with the above powers
EO PE would boost the value and strength of your powers
boost your low PE stat
boost your personal SDC

Skill-wise, I would make sure to pick up some ancient WP's... Knife, Targeting/Thrown, Sword, Shield
Maybe see if the GM would allow WP Energy Pistol but only in conjunction with your Force Bolts. Perhaps later on, tack on "Sniper".
To help with more complex "Force Constructs", consider Mechanical Engineer or at the least, Basic Mechanics.

That's got some life to it... That's a sexy build.

Anyway, in the HU GM's guide Wayne had Shock (the character not the group) use her WP skills for her powers, so we've used that as a rule for a while.

Glad I could help. I would love to see the final write-up.

Also, so that you dont have to blow a skill program to buff yourself out physically, you could take the Super Soldier Enhancement "Physical Transformation" and then to go with launching force bolts and such... perhaps "Uncanny Targeting and Throwing"??

Keep in mind, you can form guns as well.

Create Force Constructs is such a non-sensical power as written, I'd personally pass on it. Force Aura or Totem Aura would be cool complimentary powers, as would Alter Physical Structure: Force Field. With the Super Soldier enhancements you could skip Ex P.E. and instead take Flying Force Disk, which is an amazing power with awesome applications to the Create Force Field power.

Can force fields be moved? With the normal power, the answer isn't clear (probably "no"), but with Flying Force Disk you now have reasonable guidelines for how you could do that! Create Force Field + Flying Force Disc is my favorite power combo.

GM said no. Lol, she pointed out I'd do exactly what you were suggesting I'd do. Fun side note, she also requested that I avoided tech builds.

So I went with Gravity Manip, Gravity Waves and Manipulate Kinetic energy. Add to that Brain boost, Mind/body attunement and Uncanny targeting and throwing. I spent three skills on power focusing. One on offensive/blast uses (using WP pistol as the template, which seems to be what Shock uses). One on defensive uses, using WP Shield as the template. And I used the third skill for flight control which uses pilot airplane as the template, and is used for control rolls in flight, power tricks, and air to air evasions. Plus because I took it, the GM allowed me to blend my flight speeds together for a whooping 70 MPH. Which works for me.

I named him Dylan Chase, based on the image of the ponce master general Adam Jensen. I was thinking "Red Shift" for the code name, after the gravitic effect

Other down sides we don't get all of our powers uses at once. Things will unlock as we play. I'm starting with full control of my manipulate kinetic energy, and I can kind of float and throw gravity blasts.

Worse thing is, a villainous SECTOR sub-director from a past future heroes game is our boss. Michael Sutherland. In the future, to infect my computer system, he sent my hardware character a nude selfie that had the virus contained in it. He's as weird as he is evil. And he's very weird.

Just got an E-mail, looks like the others will be playing mutant/super soldiers as well. I thought I'd post the other PCs as far as I know.

The end-replacement will be swapped out for the same concept with two minor abilities and four bumps on the Super soldier enhancement table, plus his special weapons will be built in (which was fine with the GM because his character concept was cool, and his power total was somewhat limited compared to the rest of us).

Code Name: Steel
Jesus Ortega
Mutant super soldier

His concept is basically a mutant who's powers can't function without technological help. He was a US marine who was near fatally hurt during Desert Storm. His cybernetic heart and eyes were co-opted by his powers, and integrated by his powers into his body.

Mutant abnormality: Unusually broad and stocky.
Super powers: Physical Perfection, Superhuman Strength. Unbreakable bones (was originally skeletal plating, but was upgraded for better balance within the group).
Super Soldiers enhancements: Attempt to make invulnerable, Internal Robotic Medical System, Bionic Sensor System.
Bonus weapons (built into the character) Powered punch gauntlets (with his other abilities that might be 6d6+1d4 + PS for damage) 40 charges per hour, recharged by his energy bio-aura... thingy.

Special note, HTH Commando.

Description: My understanding is he'll be a big guy, with his best stats in his physical attributes. Hispanic, grew up in east LA, avoided the gang life, joined the marines. He has a knack for machines, always have. When the doctors at Ramstein noticed something was up, he was tested, and information on his... condition was sent to SECTOR, and he was transferred to The Laboratory.

Code Name: Stiletto
Jennifer Tayler.
Mutant super soldier.

Stiletto was caught using her powers to steal jewelry, and while trying to escape, she killed (accidently?) a security guard. SECTOR stepped in, took her from SCRET and sent her The Laboratory. They gave her much better control of her powers, and helped draw them all out.

Mutant abnormalities: Metallic silver hair (she just grabbed that one, she didn't roll at all).
Powers: One Major, APS Mercury. Two Minor, Adhesion and Radar.
Super Soldier enhancements: Increased leaping ability. Physical Transformation. Mind and body more attuned (sacrificed the special vehicle and special weapon to pick up increased leaping soldier benefit.

Jen has links to the Mutant underground.

Code Name: Shockwave
Alistair Halloway.
Mutant super soldier.

Mutant abnormality: None.
Powers: One Major, sonic power. Two minor, flight wingless and detonation/explosive power.
Super Soldier enhancements: Attempted to instill Engergy Ability (which is a left over from his APS electricity concept), Increased Agility and Dex, Physical transformation.

Gear and final pick on the enhancement table was traded for flight wingless power.

He sends me the selfie, as if he'd mistakenly sent it me rather then his mistress, knowing I'd share it with the rest of the team to make fun of him. Knocked our phones and some of the lesser systems off line, freaked out the antivirus. The his goon, Fade, tried to kill one of us, and beat the crap out or my character while I was working on my armor.

Toldja invulnerability is a great choice for superheroes who'd suck at melee.

Invulnerability, APS Plasma, Geo-powers, the matter expulsion powers and Control Radiation are on the by exception only list.

Besides, that was a different character, without super powers.
