i've come up with my own set of houserule adjustments and new systems.. but book legal ones will be easier to adapt to different people's games.

If this thread is for fellow GMs, can we throw out the starting budget? I'm itching to design a space station, but I can't do the type that PCs are likely to stop at on even the maximum budget.

Please do. Just give the budget so I can know how much it DOES cost....but a few pre-built stations would be useful. Very useful. VERY VERY USEFUL. (is that enough encouragement? I can keep going if you like :P)

Well, most space stations are not (theoretically) funded/built by a single individual, but if a group got together, and each got to roll for budget, and then they combined budgets... well, there you have a space station budget...

I would just like to see what one looks like, if you wanted to make and post one I would be interested, with a total budget at the end, if possible, please.

This space station was created primarily for space mining and spaceship construction, but also hosts travelers to help pay for its upkeep. Since a lot of facilities geared towards running the station and mining/manufacture are not covered in the book, I lumped all those under "Recreation Facilities". Cost and modules may not be very realistic, but I couldn't come up with better.

Great to see a thread like this one after I've been away for so long. Gives an author the warm and fuzzies. :)

I just wanted to comment, as the original clarification is likely buried in an ancient thread somewhere, but the construction rules were edited (not by me) following their use in making the ships in the GG. The ships themselves were also edited (again, not by me), so actually using the published ships as examples of the construction system is a flawed endeavor. I'm not sure if I have a copy of the original manuscript anymore, so I can't say what may have been specifically changed with one exception:

The module was originally an ambiguous value representing the relative bulk and/or overall structural space that a given component, system, weapon or modification would occupy out of the overall structural balance of the craft. It was never intended to have defined dimensions except possibly in specific case, such as storage systems. So if calculated, physical space for something based on a given module cost seems stupid or unrealistic...in all likelihood, it is.

Also note that the system tends to break down at larger sizes and the second Atorian sourcebook (no, it was never written) was intended to have separate construction rules for space stations, dreadnoughts and other large craft above a certain size (no, I don't specifically remember what that upper limit was supposed to be).

Could we get this thread Stickied? (This would protect it from necro-pruning right?)
I would hate to see a deliberately long term thread die out

Alrighty, this is something I've had in my head for the past few weeks - even set up an excel Spreadsheet with formulas to work it all out easily. Now I do some soft breaks and some hard breaks from the rules, but in my opinion they are for the most part minor and shouldn't be a problem. Specifically, I went over the listed tonnage maximums for some types of ships (a 120,000 ton Deployer and four 30,000 ton Battleships), and often combined weapon systems of the same type artistically into a single system (All costs, damages, ranges, etc, are as if they were separate systems that were fire-linked). There is also a System on one that is an interdiction-type device as mentioned in Fleets of the 3 Galaxies (a needed piece of technology not available in the given source material, but fits thematically, I believe.)

Concept: this is an invasion/raiding fleet. It's purpose is to extort vast sums of money from planets and space stations through the threat of force. In that regard, much of the design and purpose is to present a highly mobile and formidable challenge to standard combat fleets, so that the inhabitants of a given planet would much rather pay up than risk destruction. The fleet could also be a rather massive mercenary force, capable of waging entire wars for someone willing to pay the price. The first race to create and use such a fleet were the Toogarth: one of these vessels is used as an Imperial Throne ship for the Queen of the Toogarth Empire.

The fleet is made up of 5 custom ship designs, along with other, standard fare
    1 Apocalypse-Pattern Mega-Deployer - a 120,000 ton leviathan and centerpiece to the fleet
1 Eradicator-Pattern Space Station - A 10,000 ton War-Station that hosts an Interdiction Field Generator to prevent enemy forces from running away or arriving dangerously close to the fleet
4 Hellgate-Pattern Dreadnoughts - 30,000 Battleships, used as force projection and as the main defense for the Mega-Deployer
100 Holocaust-Pattern Heavy Destroyers - 800 tons of firepower designed to rain death and destruction upon cities from point-blank range. They Will often carry a detachable 100-ton cargo bay with which they can host either invading troops, a small fighter escort, or to use as a collection plate for tribute/protection money and goods
Talon/Trident-Pattern Light Fighters - Agile and grossly over-powered (and under-protected) for their size, these fighter rely and superior range and manueverability to keep up against heavier fighters while their small size allows more to be carried
Other, heavier fighters and shuttles are also used to give a proper variety in deployment.

In total, that is 250,000 ship-tons of hardware, or about 25-50 Capitol Ships (Leviathans, Eviscerators, and Hordes-pattern Deployers): Most planetary systems will not have that kind of protection on hand, and thus the very idea of trying to fight it out is often not feasible: Pay up or face annihilation. The speed of the Main Vessel (Factor 300) ensures that any help that might come will likely arrive to late: the fleet will have moved on by then, onto their next target.

First, the Apocalypse:

Description: A long central core with a hex-shaped cross section, 24,000 feet in length and 1,000 feet in height and width, ends in a set of four wings, each protruding another 1,000 feet from the hull near the aft of the vessel. These wings are the docking points for the Hellgate Dreadnoughts, and each has a beam 1,000 feet long for the attachment, A outcropping rises from the top of the craft, about a third of the way from the back, where the Eradicator War-Station docks, just in front of the Magnetic Towing Array. At the bow of the vessel is a single opening, the terminus of the Doomsday-Class Railgun that runs nearly the entire length of the ship.

Class: Deployer (oversized)
Crew: 6,000 - Automated systems account for the remained of would have been a standard amount of a crew so large
Tonnage: 120,000 Ship-Tonnes (1,200,000 tons of mass)
Internal Bays: 28 bays for a total of 91,600 tons - 25 of 3,600 tons each (90,000 tons total), 1 of 1,000 tons, 2 of 300 tons each (600 tons total)
Armor: Main: Light (AR 12, 1,200,000 SDC), Bay Armor: Light (AR 12, 100 SDC) for all 28 bays, Turret Armor: Light (Ar 12, 100 SDC) for the equivalent of 2,440 turrets
Drive: Antimatter Fusion (Factor 300)
SDC: 1,200,000 Armor, 16,000,000 fore the main body, 8,000,000 for the Engines. 12,000,000 SDC Full-body Force Field
Weapons:
1 Doomsday-class Mass Driver (equivalent to 200 Battleship-class Heavy Mass Drivers). Damage is 2D4x100,000 SDC Combat Range is a mere 85 miles, but can be used at greater ranges on stationary or know-trajectory targets, such planetary targets. Rate of fire is standard which allows for a withering barrage against opposing battleships and stations, but the whole ship must move to aim at a new target, as there was no way to place this weapon in a turret - the accelerator takes up nearly the entire length of the ship.
40 Battleship-Class Lasers, distributed around the hull for defense against larger vessels. They are housed in retractable, rotating turrets for the best possible protection and coverage
100 Long-Range Missile Batteries in retractable housings, each armed with 100 (10 packs of 10) Heavy Nuclear Missiles. Automated Reloading
100 Anti-ship Laser Batteries, housed in retractable rotating turrets, used primary for anti-fighter and anti-missile defense
2,000 Medium Ion Cannons, housed in retractable, rotating turrets, used for anti-fighter and anti-missile defense
Defensive Systems:
1,000 Pinpoint Shields, Electronic Countermeasures, Magnetic Shielding
Sensors:
Advanced Sensor Package, Geological Sensor Array, Military Sensor Array, Scientific Senor Array
Auto-Pilot Computer (90%), Super Navigation Computer (98% Sub/98% FTL)
Motion Sensor & Perimeter Warning System
Satellite Uplink Computer
Targeting Radar & Combat Computer

Second, the Eradicator:

This is a space station built for War, more specifically to keep the fight local: the biggest feature of this facility is the Interdiction Field Generator, taking up have of the available space. This Generator prevents any nearby vessels from engaging in FTL Travel by sending gravitational disruptions through space. Those already going at FTL speeds, when they enter the field will be pulled out at the fields edge, and must use STL travel methods from there. The main benefit of this system is to hold off enemy forces from simply porting behind defensive lines and attacking the Apocalypse-pattern Deployer directly. It also also stalls any forces coming to aid an embattled enemy, giving the fleet time to adjust their tactics accordingly, including returning to the deployer and retreating

Description: The station is shaped like a torus, with a long spindle running through the empty center, attached by four spokes. The mass of the station is distributed so that 1/3rd of it is in the spindle, and the remaining 2/3rds of it is in the ring, where the vast majority of weapons are located.

Class: Space Station
Crew: 6,000 - the extra amount over what is standard for a space station is made up of engineers for the Interdiction Field Generator and Fire Control Officers to man the various weapon systems on board, as well as pilots and other support personnel
Tonnage: 10,000 Ship-Tonnes (100,000 tons of mass)
Internal Bays: 4 bays for a total of 1,600 tons - 400 tons each
Armor: Main: Battleship (AR 16, 800,000 SDC), Bay Armor: Battleship (AR 17, 400 SDC) for all 4 bays, Turret Armor: Battleship (AR 16, 400 SDC) for the equivalent of 1,456 turrets
Drive: None, relies on the Apocalypse-pattern Deployer for movement
SDC: 800,000 Armor, 2,000,000 fore the main body. 1,000,000 SDC Full-body Force Field
Weapons: All weapons are distributed evenly across the station
64 Great Cannons, built as dual-barreled rotating turrets, four per quadrant per side (top/bottom)
128 Battleship-Class Lasers in rotating turrets, four barrels per turret, four per quadrant per side
64 Anti-Ship Ion Batteries, builtin rotating turrets along the outer edge of the station, 8 per quadrant
32 Long Range Missile Batteries distributed evenly around the station, 100 (10 packs of 10) Heavy Nuclear Missiles per launcher, with an automated reloading system
1200 Medium Particle beams in retractable, rotating turrets, distributed evenly around the station (200 per quadrant, 200 each on the top and bottom spires)
Defensive Systems:
500 Pinpoint Shields, Electronic Countermeasures, Magnetic Shielding
Sensors:

Third, the Hellgate:

These massive dreadnoughts serve both as a screening and protection force for the Apocalypse Mega-Deployer as well as expeditionary forces in their own right. They can also serve as a back-up means of propulsion should the Engines of the Apocalypse fail, linking their drives together to pull the massive ship into safe space for repairs. Each carries a formidable amount of both heavy firepower and an assortment of interceptors to take on a wide variety of targets.

Description: The ship is shaped like an arrowhead, with one of the broad sides raised to give it a higher arch, producing a triangular cross-section a Command Tower rises from this arch a third of the way from the rear of the vessel. Weapons and features are distributed along these two sides, as well as the bottom of the hip, which contains an open beam for linking with the Apocalypse

Fourth, the Holocaust:

These are trans-atmospheric Heavy Destroyers. While the Apocalypse may be able to terrorize from afar, it is thse craft that are able to go down to a planet's surface and wreck havoc on it's inhabitants. They carry a wide array of energy weaponry, allowing them to engage targets for extended conflicts while carrying battleship-class armor that makes them practically immune to most surface combat craft. They can easily decimate cities, and carry a detachable external dock that can be filled with invading ground forces, escort fighters, or left empty and used to carry cargo - such as tribute or ransom - from the surface without ever having to land and risk exposure. An Apocalypse-pattern Mega-Deployer can hold 100 of these ships, along with their external cargo docks, within it's holds.

Description: The ship has a wedge-shape, with a fairly flat top and a downward angle on the bottom, going from bow to stern: most of it's weaponry is mounted on this angled side, so that it can engage both targets in front of it (such as when used in fleet actions) or below it (such as when laying siege to a city). At the very bottom of the craft, just in front of the engines, is a section of the craft that is concave inwards - this rectangular area is for the detachable 100-ton bay, to be used with for other craft or cargo. A magnetic tow array sits just in front of it to bring the bay up or set it gently onto the surface.

Class: Destroyer
Crew: 80
Tonnage: 800 Ship-Tonnes (800 tons of mass)
Internal Bays: None, has an attachment point for 1 100 ton External Bay
Armor: Main: Battleship (AR 16, 80,000 SDC), Turret Armor: Battleship (AR 16, 400 SDC) for the equivalent of 38 turrets
Drive: Anti-Gravity Drive (Factor 20)

Fifth, the Trident:

Also referred to as a Talon-pattern interceptor, this is as bare-bones of a fighter as you can find, but one that can punch much harder than one would expect for such a small craft. At a mere 10 tons, it is half the size of the more common Warshrike Light Interceptor, but it boasts 3 MEDIUM fire-linked ion cannons, allowing it to do considerable damage. A full-body force-filed helps to increase it's survival by bolstering the damage it can withstand, bring it almost on-par with the twice as heavy Warshrike. Anti-missile Chaff and advanced maneuvering also increase it's survivability in dog-fighting. It's best defense is it's range and manueverability, as it can often hit similar fighters long before they can hit it, and hit them hard enough to knock them out quickly.

Description: A teardrop-shaped fuselage with three wings arcing from the large portion in the back toward the front, where the narrow portion of the fuselage is.. At the end of each wing is a large ion-cannon. two of the wings are set flat, forming a plane that contains the landing gear.
