I ask because with straight dice, a 50ft fall would only do 5d6 (avg. 15 points of damage) as opposed to to 15d6 (avg. 45 points of damage). Clearly a fall from 50 feet should be fatal in most instances.

How about "rolling with punch/fall"? What would you need to roll to take half damage?

FYI at 100 d6 you reach terminal velocity

5D6 averages closer to 18, and 15D6 averages to 53.

I don't however, have an answer to your question directly, I think the intended rule is XD6, where X is Feet / 10 (Meaning 2D6 for a 20 Foot Drop). That said, I think the additive method in your second example is much more realistic. Even then, some beefy races can do that, more so with the pretty softballed roll with impact required, since it doesn't scale with the height. Even at 15D6, taking 50~ Damage, a roll with impact cuts it to 25, most wolfen survive that with some left as I recall.
