Amor Regeneration, no leather?

Unread post by RockJock »

In Western Empire, under the Regenerating Armor enchantment it specifically says the enchantment only works on metal armors, thus it can't work on say studded leather armor. In your games do you follow this exclusion? Just curious.

I would probably ignore it, myself... magically repairing leather is already pretty possible, so I don't see why you couldn't design a similar effect.

I whip out Rule Zero and delete this rule totally. I allow any and all armor to be made regenerating.
This allows me to go wild with designing armors for games.
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

Perhaps the reason for the limitation isn't so much a "you can't" but a "you shouldn't." For example, it may be that the spell, if something goes wrong, might allow the leather to keep regenerating into the beast from which the material originally came? Or, if it does so while worn, turns the wearer into a strange hybrid? (That would probably be more appropriate for Nightbane and its "living magic" concept, but it could be a cool idea to run with in a campaign.)

Lol, Hey guys, ya know how the Alchemist said regenerating studded leather was a bad idea but I got him to do it anyway, points into tavern room and shows 2000lbs grumpy looking bull with lots and lots of stud piercings ... Maybe he was right...

I am so going to talk a player into trying it lol.

To my knowledge, regeneration is the only enchantment that lists a limit like this, so it always struck me as unusal. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

My stance remains, but this is amusing.

Especially if you still end up with an 2,000 pound bull with body studs...

Can't you patch leather with sewing already?

Stud regeneraiton should maybe account for 50% SDC restoration at half the speed.

The ruling might be in part due to how magic absorbed into metals more readily then into natural items.

Drew, if I had to come up with an in game reason for why regeneration wouldn't work on leather it would be the metal/magic connection. The problem for that logic in my book is that none of the other enchantments limit only to metal.
