1st edition PFRPG vs. Revised PFRPG

Unread post by Jack Burton »

Sorry if this has been discussed. Between so many archived threads and a mediocre (at best) search feature, I couldn't find anything.

I bought the PFRPG 1st edition during the Bundle of Holding a while back and am wondering if it's worth delving into as opposed to buying 2nd edition stuff. Without getting too far into the weeds:

1) What are the MAIN differences?
2) Should I even deal with it or should I just get the 2nd edition books?

(Money isn't an issue when taking into account whether to play 1st edition vs. 2nd, although don't tell my wife I said that)

Thanks!

I only have the PF1r so I can't say how PF1r is different from PF1.(speaking to the topic title)
The difference between PF1R and PF 2nd ed are many.

Note that the 'Yin Sloth' and 'Island at the Edge of the World' are PF1 books but are still being used with 2nd ed. At this point I doubt they will be updated to 2nd ed.

Well, I can't believe there is no information on the differences between 1st and 2nd editions. Here is a quick rundown on the major differences:

1. Spells run on PPE not spells per day.
2. SDC (BOO!)
3. There are only four H2H skills.
4. There are differences in the OCC's from one edition to the other.
5. Major psionics don't get a chance to have each power. Only Mind Mages have the super powers.

Vek,
Prior to using SDC, how did you calculate damage?

In second ed player characters get sdc as well as hp, and fighters get more sdc. There is still sdc for armour and other things is what I think he meant.

Greetings and Salutations. There's a sticky thread on the subject here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=48575

As for which you prefer, that'll be largely a personal preference. I've never played 1st Edition, so I tend to stick with 2nd Edition as it's the most current and the rules edition newer books will use. However, there are some flavor elements that some of the older players (and by "older," I mean those who played 1st Edition) prefer, and there are a few sourcebooks which were never updated to 2nd.

Hopefully the above link will give you the highlights and help you make an informed decision of which is best for you. Farewell and safe journeys.
Living the Fantasy (fan website)

Vek,
Prior to using SDC, how did you calculate damage?

In PF1r
Characters only had Hit Points.
Armor had SDC.
Damage was just 'damage'.

So what he meant was prior to Chars having SDC.

That's exactly the thread I was looking for. Thank you!

I just ordered the Christmas Surprise Package and asked Santa Kevin for a whole lotta PFRPG! I'm going to do 2nd edition and use my 1st edition stuff I got from the Bundle of Holding as reference material and ideas. I can't wait to see what comes in the mail!

Christmas arrived early today! My Christmas Surprise Package came with the 2nd edition core rulebook, Yin-Sloth Jungles and Land of the Damned Two: Eternal Torment. Aliens Unlimited Galaxy Guide was thrown in for good measure!

I'm anxious to check the core book out.
