Javelins and Studded Leather questions

Unread post by Iron Sorcerer »

The equipment section states studded leather's weight is 20 pounds, which is the same as plate (half), is this right?
Also javelins are listed as costing 30 gold, is this accurate for a throw-away weapon?

Thank you to those who have answered my many questions.

I believe studded leather would be relatively heavy. half as much as plate sounds right. 30 GP for a javelin, i would cut that to 10 gp.

The problem is, studded leather, as defined in gaming literature, doesn't actually exist. Instead, the studs are actually rivets hold metal plates in place. This style of armour is called brigandine and is close to plate armour in weight and protective levels.

Stud leather, as described in game, should have little more protective value than leather and a bunch of weight as the mostly useless studs are fairly heavy when added up. It still should be considerably lighter than plate however.

In Palladium there is no mechanic that means a javelin thrown is a javelin lost. If your gm introduces one a price cut would make sense.

i have generally assumed that the 'studded leather' in RPG's is using the studs to hold together multiple layers of leather and cloth. stiffened leather backed by layers of padded cloth would match the lower end performance of studded leather armor in RPG's. sort of like leather Lamellar Armor in basic concept.

as for Javelins, i would point out that the ones that are in the book are of a type that tends to be fairly large sized (a good 3-4 feet long), have to be made from fairly specific wood, and have well worked Iron heads.
also, they are not technically disposable.. historically you can recover them after battle (or at least the victor can). Hunters would usually recover them after killign the animal, or while tracking a wounded one. Gladiators using them would often recover them mid-battle.
