Using 2nd ed. resources for 1st ed. PFRPG.

Unread post by cyberdon »

Hey guys:

If I were to run the 1st edition Fantasy rpg, could I use it fairly seamlessly with 2nd edition resources?

Ie. Use 2nd edition monsters 'as is' with the 1st edition main rpg book?

Thanks. :)

2nd Edition monsters tend to have higher HP and be overall more powerful in attacks and so forth. Also, 2nd edition used SDC. I think 2nd edition combat has more attacks per round too, but I may be mistaken.

Short answer: you're going to need to do some converting.

Fortunately, a lot of monsters are statted in the 1st edition rule book.

I thought the main difference is the addition of two attacks and the addition of S.D.C.? You could probably start your conversion by just removing those two things from 2nd Ed and see where that leaves you.

By and large, if you strip the 2 attacks and SDC from the monster, you've got a usable 1e monster. Since Palladium doesn't rely on an individualized XP for each monster, instead judging it on relative threat, you might even leave in the 2 attacks and the SDC... it's just tougher than expected.

(I would not, incidentally, do that; Palladium combat is a slog as it is, and adding more HP and attacks just makes it longer).

grab a first ed monsters and animals but I use the gods stats from 2nd pretty much the way they are, same with dragons and demon lords, and generally the 2nd ed hp for the demons.

Things to think about
Try to avoid the fleet feet spell even though it is the spell that most players aim to get
make cloud of slumber not work on creatures with more than 20 hp

I do have a heap of house rules I can send ya to help with the missing things so you can look to sorting them out yourself.

PF2e Doesn't use the 2 for living rules IIRC their hand to hand combats are more inline with RMB version. Also IIRC 1st ed PF had some odd level up tables for each of the main book classes telling you what you get at each level. Though I may be wrong on that it has been many years since the Ferkelbergers stole my PF 1sted book.
