The Handy Dandy Random PALLADIUM FANTASY Adventure Generator

Unread post by Gallahan »

The tables are available below; it's enough to create the foundations of your story/adventure/campaign.
HANDY DANDY RANDOM PALLADIUM FANTASY ADVENTURE GENERATOR

The first table is one of locations throughout the Palladium world, all based on the core fantasy rulebook. These can be expanded with locations from the sourcebooks later, but for now, I'm sticking only to information in the 2nd Edition Palladium Fantasy rulebook.

The second table generates PROTAGONISTS.

The third table generates RECENT EVENTS used to help tie elements from the first two tables together and/or help stimulate your creativity in new directions. Remember, these elements are CREATIVITY ANCHORS.

Great point! :)
I created the BTS tables/thread. And now I'm working on a fantasy generator. It's proving to be a load of fun!

First Two Tables for the HDR Generator for Palladium Fantasy

Unread post by Gallahan »

Here are two tables to help randomly generate locations and characters for any Palladium Fantasy story/adventure idea. I recommend rolling-up at least three or four locations to get the wheels turning, and then doing the same for heroes/protagonists.

And, if you're inclined, it would be neat to see what kinds of heroes and locations you generate here, and then how you put them together into a story or story-hook of some kind.

Remember, these elements are CREATIVITY ANCHORS, used to stimulate ideas and get the imagination going... Have fun!

Table 0.1: TABLE OF TABLES

Table 0.1: TABLE OF TABLES
Table 1.0: REGIONAL SETTINGS
Table 2.0: PROTAGONISTS
Table 3.0: RECENT EVENTS

TABLE 1.0: REGIONAL SETTINGS: These locations are based on areas/regions of the map of the Palladium Fantasy world. However, the majority of the locations in the table were created from my imagination (i.e. they don't appear in any of the sourcebooks). But, there should be enough of a "creativity anchor" in the names of the places for you to think of something to make that place interesting. For example, "The Land of the Damned" are a "real" region in Palladium Fantasy. But, one of the locations you can randomly generate there is "The Field of Graves," --something I came up with, not in a sourcebook, unless by pure chance. However, "The Field of Graves" being in the "The Land of the Damned" sort of hints at what it might look like, what might lurk there... It might be enough to spur your imagination to fill in the details and make a map of a deserted village, perhaps one on the edge of the field of graves, and some of the inhabitants might be fighting off the undead --or might be undead themselves. Could there be a crypt in the Field of Graves? Might there be an armored skeleton host there? Perhaps ancient artifacts... You get the idea.

TABLE 2.0 NOTES
Use these tables and sub-tables to generate main characters for your story. If you merely wish to generate standard O.C.C.s available throughout the Palladium Fantasy world, simply use Table 2.1 (Protagonist O.C.C.s). If you want to generate a more specific occupation for that character, then roll again on Table 2.0 (Protagonists), ignoring result no. 1 (Protagonist O.C.C.s) since you already generated that. This will give the protagonist O.C.C. you generated a more specific occupation.
If you want to generate a completely random character, simply roll on Table 2.0 (Protagonists) and go with whatever result you get. Some of the results will tell you to roll one or more times on the tables (e.g. generating a multi-occupational character is one of the random results in these tables). This merely means that the character has had a diverse career history, and generally will be of a higher level. Of course, you will determine the levels of the characters you generate, based on the needs of the story you are fleshing-out.
If something doesn’t seem to make sense, ignore the result and roll again. But, do try your best to make even unlikely combinations somehow fit into a good story; these kinds of unusual combinations can add a unique aspect to your story and cause you to create a richer, more flavorful tale. Challenge yourself to make the widely diverse elements in these tables to coalesce into something interesting and thought-provoking. The best stories tend to be filled with unexpected and unconventional elements tied together in an imaginative way.
Take, for example, how an Undead Hunter could also be Charlatan. Perhaps she sells elixirs to finance her pursuits of the undead. While her “cures” may not be effective, perhaps they also do no physical harm. However, her past may catch up with her if someone (or a village!) feels swindled by her fake snake oils. Or, maybe, her elixirs are filled with healthy natural extracts and do actually benefit the physical body, but probably don’t necessarily cure the plague (or whatever other ailment is claimed).
You see, half of the fun is not merely generating a random character, but also in finding ways to explain the results. This gets your creative juices flowing and challenges your imagination to thoughtfully combine varied elements into a unified story. Before you know it, as you generate more characters and other elements in these tables, you begin to sculpt away at that creative clay of the imagination.
Enjoy your journey!

NOTE: For characters/protagonists with more than one O.C.C., an appropriate background should be generated to explain why this particular person would possess such a multitude of skills. This, in and of itself, should prove a powerful, creative exercise! Some examples may include intervention by deities, exposure to magic, a mother/father who had been exposed to magic or enchanted pact, deity as a parent, influence by highly magical item/artifact, and/or a highly unusual upbringing. Of course, the sky’s the limit when it comes to origin stories. Treat these characters almost like fantasy examples of superheroes. And, the overall story generated will probably be influenced and altered by the fact that it contains within it such a powerful central character. It is up to the person generating the random story items to determine how best to fit these very special personas into the adventure being generated.

TABLE 3.0: RECENT EVENTS is used to help bridge the locations and characters you've already generated, and also serves to possibly extend and branch your ideas into new areas. Remember, all these randomly generated elements serve as CREATIVITY ANCHORS to assist your imagination. I recommend rolling-up about 4-6 locations, 4-6 characterrs and 4-6 recent events. Don't use something that doesn't fit, or challenge yourself with coming up with a creative way to make the story work with all generated elements. Consider it a mental game/challenge! Enjoy!

The first two tables are enough to provide an adventure anchor, generating people and places.

The third table helps bridge PEOPLE and PLACES with EVENTS, making connections and/or establishing NEW PATHS of thought and creativity.

Enjoy! Post some of your story ideas and elements generated!

I wonder if Palladium is planning to "update" Palladium Fantasy 2nd Edition perhaps with a 3rd Edition like some folks in these forumns have spoken about. I wonder if THAT would be a neat kind of thing. I think it would.

I don't know if I can actually use these tables. My nose started to bleed a little bit from trying to process just what the hell's going on.

So many tables, so many options. and how the hell can you have a triple classed character? How would you even write that up? The rules for having a dual class character are sketchy enough. Having a triple classed character would be like trying to divide by zero

Sure, there are a lot of tables, but this is by far not a complicated situation.

The reason more tables/options are preferred us that you aren't likely to get the same story elements over and over. Just generate four locations, five characters and six recent events, and you've got the essentials for a one-shot adventure, or even the beginnings of a campaign. We learn best by DOING. Just break out some dice and start chucking. Anything worthwhile takes just a little effort. Just Do It! :)

Is there a reason you don't just hit the random button at donjon to lay out the base of a campaign?

Good question. Unfortunately, I am not personally familiar with "donjon." Also, there is something to creating random tables that I find appealing. Last, these tables should differ from those offered elsewhere, aside from the Palladium Fantasy locations. The sub-locations in these tables are mostly original, and completely open for personal development if/when they are generated.

Also, keep in mind that these are "creativity anchors."

It's all good; I was just wondering why you would go to such great lengths - with wonderful results, I should add - when donjon has already done the heavy lifting regarding adventure synopsis for you. The linkage:

http://donjon.bin.sh/

To be fair, it's a bit biased towards D&D/d20/Pathfinder, but a lot of the random tools there are mighty useful for any fantasy setting.

TABLE 3.7: POLITICAL

2. A noble seeks more power and sends his archers to shoot flaming arrows into the harvest fields of surrounding farmlands until the homesteaders/farmers swear complete loyalty
3. A noble seeks more power and sends assassins to eliminate nearby village/town/city leaders until everyone swears complete loyalty
4. A noble seeks more power and sends garrisons of troops to occupy nearby towns until everyone complies with new directives and swears complete loyalty
5. A noble seeks more power and sets into motion a plot to subtly assassinate his/her 1d4 older sibling(s)
6. A merchant seeks more power and hires mercenaries to attack competing caravans until his/her are the only ones operating in the region
7. A merchant seeks more power and utilizes the powers of a forgotten artifact to cause the prince/princess to fall in love with him/her
8. A merchant seeks more power and uses local thugs and monster clans to disrupt the harvest, stating that he/she will regain control of the region if the locals will simply dethrone the mayor/baron/lord
9. A merchant seeks more power and uses an ancient artifact to cause (roll Table 3.6), also using its power to resolve the problem, thereby winning local hearts against the established ruling party
10. A merchant seeks more power and hires assassins to eliminate the local nobility; during the chaos, he/she takes charge

20. A changeling successfully slays the king/queen of the region of (roll Table 1.0 + appropriate sub-tables), then begins initiating his/her plans for ambitious conquest!

Are these really the only plots you could come up with? I am not trying to make fun or anything like that, just saying that this category deserve at least 100. Also I would expand the disasters to at least having 30. Forest fires. Water contamination. Radiation. Mine collapse. Extended seasons. Extreme temperature. Famine/Crop failure. Maelstrom/Whirlpool (aquatic locations or close to one only). Natural gas leak. A wondering leyline. Broken leyline makes an area of wild magic. Etc. List plagues/diseases in a separate category. By the way, you listed beavers damming a river, but not of it bursting. Something to think about.

Well, all I can say is that there are 20 tables here, each with 20 options, and many of them have sub-options. Sure, each table could have 100 options. Feel free to imagine and create your own set of tables and expand upon them. And, also, expect that IF you do, and share them with others, that people will criticize you for not including "this" or leaving out "that."

This is the work if a single individual. No one person can come up all posdible options, and even if they did, there wouldn't feasibly be enough room. I could also have included options of people's heads turning into ruby eggs, too, but there's just not enough room. LOL

By all means expand any table here and post it here; this can be a collaborative effort! :)

If you'll look at the BTS tables, you'll see that others CONTRIBUTED to the tables. If you can think of interesting options, then your imaginative contributions are welcome. It's apparent that these random elements (aka Imagination Anchors) have gotten your creativity energized, as you came up with the idea of the beaver dam bursting, even though it wasn't listed. SEE? That's part of the magic. So even if the option isn't part of the tables, your mind will create doorways and other POSSIBILITIES.

It's easy to criticize any creative work and ask "Is this all you could come up with?" when you aren't the one who created the work. It's a lot like armchair quarterbacking. Have you read all of the tables? While no random tables could ever encompass all possibilities, these tables are enough to help people come up with ideas. Especially considering you're rolling up about six options out of 400, not counting the numerous sub-options.

I didn't mean it as an insult...Let me start over. Have you considered adding s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z to your disasters catagory? Also, have you considered moving p into a category of health and expanding more on that? It was good. And I plan on using it, with some modifications. Yes, I read it all. Not sure what you mean by "adding S, T, U, V..." To Disasters category. I have 20 numbered options there, no letters. But, I have personal fantasy tables I haven't shared, from my own fantasy world, where I have 20 Regional Areas, and each of the 20 actually had 100 locations. Same goes for Recent Events. You were right about having more options per category, but Palladium isn't my personal creation and I couldn't go all-out because that would devote waaaay too much time. Believe it or not, these tables took a LONG time to produce. When you see them completed, it looks like I whipped all three tables out in three hours. But, when you start with a blank page just waiting for original content, it takes a lot of focus, creativity and time. And then there's reading and rereading and editing.

Plus, having 100 options for 20 tables would overwhelm the text limit and the space needed in separate posts would be awkward. Logistically, 20 options fit the bill. Back to your Political category comments: if you look at Royal and Noble categories, they have political elements in them too.

I would like to see your results, and what kind of story idea you create. :)

These tables serve as a generator. They just take some effort and creativity to use.
Like board games are still games, even though there are video games that do most of the work for you. Just because you have to move the pieces, roll dice and draw cards doesn't mean board games aren't games.

That being said, if I knew how to program (other than Basic), there'd be an app for this. Some talented individuals actually created an *automated* generator (what you were referring to earlier) for my Beyond the Supernatural generator. I'm not sure if the link to their website is still operational, though.

Still, there's just something SO FUN about chucking dice and having a notepad and mechanical pencil, and generating random elements for a Palladium Fantasy story idea!

In this case the letters represented what I had already posted...S=forest fires, t=water contamination, u=radiation, etc. p=plagues.

Well, usually I have at least 3-6 things going on in the fiefdom game at the same time. I played in a game not too recently, but one where I played a noble and had to deal with floods and all of the damage that they cause, fires, beetles and bugs, plots within plots of other nobles; zealots; sycophant; my own knights; dragons; etc, riots, weather, dark cults, remaining in favor with my people, thieves guilds, taxes, demons, churches grabbing for power and domination, assassins, human epidemics, horses and farm animals epidemics, rabies, foot rot, rust because of the salt, salt marshes, faeries, trade and commerce, war; not just with with my neighbors but with other kingdoms and orcs, ogres, etc. (I controlled a large chunk of area extending to the shore and beyond...I literally had all of the border lands [which I captured and claimed from enemy forces, not from other nobles. I freed such and such, I had the option of keeping it or giving it back to weak nobles who caused the mess to begin with.] by the end of the game, plus controlled all of sea ports), meteors, ruined harvests, dragons, witches, weather, building/repaired/rebuilt and towns; ships; free libraries; schools; and colleges to educate the populous, etc.

Wow, that's an impressive and FUN sounding game! You've got a lot of things going on, and it makes me want to play in your game! :)

You've given me ideas for expansion tables. And, I have other tables planned here, too, like Story Items, Artifacts and Treaures. These "items" tables will also incorporate more than just items, but also story hooks, etc. that transcend the "item" category, as some items will have associated information.

Thanks, Tearstone. Judging by your posts in this and the BTS threads, I bet we'd collaborate pretty well together. I'd like to see your "outside" stuff too. :)

If you PM me, maybe we could talk outside scope stuff.

Um yeahhhh... I've never had that link work for me on the BTS board so.. I've had to do all my generated stuff by hand. Which I don't mind.

As for doing a collab, that's possible.

Tearstone, that automated BTS generator worked! --for a while. Then something happened and it went down. I personally used it for a few random generations, and it was SO cool. All good things... :)

Collab would be exciting.

Fun, but also a lot of work! And I do mean, a lot of it. When you run it, you must keep records of what's going on and where. The PC's must keep track of things such as how well the crops are doing, costs, how much grain and supplies are accessible within the castle, how much gold is coming in, taxes, lands, castles, towns, imports and exports, their investments, how many solders; knights; guardsmen; etc they have in all of their regions, they also need to keep track of their popularity, their intelligence/spy network, as well as magical items being sold to them, how much weapons are going for, how many guilds have setup in one area, town growth, how many nobles are their "friends", how many nobles are using them for their own means, how many nobles depend on them, how many want to see them dead or ruined, etc. Considering I controlled the borderlands and sea ports...every noble depended on me for supplies and trade as well as protection, some hated me, some used me, some wanted to see me dead, some saw me as a threat. The GM said very few PCs could have maintained control as I did. But I had so much fun. NPCs and the players were quite fun. Although, the only time we interacted face to face was when we went to war with a PC (it's rather hard to position miniatures properly other wise) or when the GM had a party and called a summit of nobles. I loved playing it. I miss it! That was a lot of fun and work..

Anyone generate an adventure idea they'd like to share?
I'm rather astonished, as the BTS forum had MANY people sharing their ideas based on these tables, and the PF community is rather shy. Is this a lack of creative enthusiasm? BTS had all sorts of stories. Oh well. :)

Mostly the lack of players I think, since PF has been fairly neglected there are a lot less active players then there used to be.

Honestly, the BTS generator was a lot simpler (imo) to use.

BTS: Table A. Roll %. Got your number? Good that is your result. Now move on to the next table.

PF: Table A. Roll D20. Got your number? Good, that's the sub-table you use. Roll that D20 again (and possibly again and again and again before) now you've got your result.

Good point, TOSAN (The Oh So Amazing Nate). The additional tables are there to add more variety and possible options. You should see my personal fantasy generation tables where there are 20 tables of 100 options each! The RECENT EVENTS portion is absolutely bat-skat crazy huge. However, for now those tables remain classified. LOL :)

See, I'd like something like that for the TMNT/ATB random generator that you're secretly building to surprise me. Build an elaborate world around me with recent events, and weather, and places of note, and special geographical features, heck even put in locations

(Happening [distance from "in" to X miles]
direction [roll if other than "in" D8 for what direction on the compass]
the location of [state D% 2% gap should cover all 50 states
roll for - the city of - (this one will be trickier)
[random rolled events are happening
).

Then make the protagonist/antagonist bit simple like in the BTS generator.

Example: Happening 37 miles SE of Galveston, Texas..(random events..probably aquatic based cause 37 miles out would be in the Gulf of Mexico)
At the center of these strange happenings is one Navin R. Johnson. An every day random S.O.B! A typical run of the mill Gas pumping Basta#d

Of course a random location generator would be a little tricker for ATB but it can still be done.

I trust you Gal..That or I 'll thank you very much not to sue my pants off for borrowing liberally from your work. Don't worry I'll give you credit

I'd squeal with glee.

No worries, Nate. Anything posted here is by default open content. Palladium probably owns every word posted here anyway. :) But, that's why I've keep the really good stuff personal and classified, because one day I might publish my really good tables, or submit these Palladium Fantasy tables to the Rifter. I love Palladium Books. When I was stationed in the middle of nowhere (felt like it) in Blytheville Arkansas, I ordered many books from them, PF, BTS, Rifts, TMNT, etc. Their products were so refreshing and imaginative, they kept my creativity and imagination going, just reading them. I wrote them a letter telling them how wonderful their products were. And, it was neat, because when Rifts came out, just by coincidence (?), Blytheville, Arkansas was one of the featured locations on their map that had brief descriptions about them. That was COOL. Anyway, enough reminiscing.

I am disappointed, however, that no one has used this PF random generator to create story ideas and post them here, though. The folks at BTS generator posted MANY ideas. Of course, that was about ten years ago, and I get the impression that PF isn't as popular as it used to be. It seems that Palladium in general seems to be losing their audience. I could be completely wrong, but that's just the impression I get.

Palladium Fantasy is a great system with a solid foundation of sourcebooks. Of course, these tables could be expanded to cover reach of these books, and that would be a great deal of fun! Feel free to include random tables you create for your favorite locations.
