Rifter 22 mass army rules

One of my players in the Palladium Fantasy game I am funning just took control of a tribe of Coyle barbarians after defeating their leader in single combat, so I've started adapting some of my plot points to revolve around larger engagements.
I'm curious if anyone has used these rules before? If they work well? Are there any quirks that aren't visible until play? But mostly, how do the players themselves, their characters, affect the battlefield?
Like, the Knight probably couldn't do much by himself against an army unless he's got some epic magic items. But, a Mind Mage might be able to do some serious damage to an enemy unit with some Super TK or Pyrokenesis.
I'm curious to hear if anyone has any input for this?
