I just finished a book that felt like it could have been about the prelude to After the Bomb with a few changes. The Gemini Effect is about a virus that mutates rats into a killer swarm (not a spoiler) and the ensuing chaos that follows as it grows and spreads death and destruction across the country.

I would recommend this book to any AtB fan who would like to have an idea of what it may have been like in that chaotic period of the Crash and how such a fast paced downward spiral could have triggered the Big Death.

First off, I LOVE Brin's works and the Uplift universe of stories was really well done. I admit I liked how non-human so many of his aliens are, but he does a great job of dealing with how an uplifted species might be at different stages.

As to other series, I just read through the Moreau Series by S. Andrew Swann and thought it was a very interesting look at what a mass 'uplift' of different species might look like and how humans would react.
