Split Second, starring Rutger Hauer! My signature on here is a quote from it :) . I think the quote sums up quite a few BTS encounters. The PCs are tracking down something they think is human and get a monster instead. Good luck getting your hands on it though. It's no longer being produced that I am aware of and can go into the hundred dollar range used :( .

Really?
Then I got pretty lucky. I found a vhs copy in a second hand store for 50 cents about a month ago. :)

I got a real kick out of that film. I love the bit where Dirkin is going through the armory looking at the high powered guns and says "Too f'n small!"

You did get lucky! I've not seen it in a store yet, the cheapest I have found it for online was $34 for VHS, around a hundred or so if you want DvD. Though seeing as how I already have the movie, I haven't really looked all that hard. I have a friend that would just about kill to get a copy of it and I'd like to get it for him. I suppose it's time for me to hit the second hand stores myself!

Have you checked E-bay? They had a couple VHS copies there for under $10 last I looked. Wow. I see what you mean on the prices though, I got a great deal. I wish you luck if you check out the second hand stores. Usually you won't find anything, but once in a while there will be a great find.

Those who have a "Hollywood Video" in their hood also probably know that they’ve declared bankruptcy and in the process of folding up shop. The one in my hood just closed its doors last weekend, but not before they had a last few days “$1.00 DVD sale” to sell off some of their stock. Even being unemployed I can afford a few of those so I stopped by and picked out a few interesting looking titles.

Well, I watched one last night and another this morning, and they’re both some the best $2.00 I’ve ever spent! The 1st one to bring up is titled “Altered” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457275/, from the director of the Blair Witch Project. It’s a horror film centered around a pack of guys are out extract revenge on this monstrous looking alien life form. If you take out “alien” and put in “supernatural monster”, you’ve got a very BTS inspiring tale on your hands.

Wyatt: “Is it still alive? Is it breathing?”
Otis: “Do they do that?”

This one has it all: altered weaponry, disturbing creatures, dark and claustrophobic scenery, supernatural hunters becoming the hunted, and even some very witty dialog to make it a worthwhile trip. I’ve seen it at Target selling for around $15.00, and I would have paid that amount for this one!

The other is probably going to be a hard find (it’s stated as a “Hollywood Video exclusive” on the cover), but it’s worth it if you can find it. It’s a ghost story, titled “100 feet” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0899128/, and the synopsis goes like this: “A young woman, Marnie Watson, is granted early release from her prison sentence for manslaughter (killing her husband - a violent NYC cop - in self defense) on condition she wear an electronic ankle bracelet and remain within her home, effectively under house arrest, for the remainder of her sentence. Her late husband's partner keeps tabs on her from a patrol car parked across the street, hoping she'll violate probation and he can send her back to prison. But the 100-foot radius her ankle bracelet allows isn't the worst of her problems. Her dead husband --now a malevolent ghost--is still in the house, where he died -- intent on savage revenge.”

This one is very mature and visceral ghost story and was unexpectedly chilling. Framke Jannsen (X-men’s movies “Jean Grey”) played a very credible job as a woman who’s effectively trapped in the old house she killed her husband in and in now being abused by the ghost of her abusive husband.

You can just see the Psychological sufferings she goes through as a woman snubbed by all her neighbors and in her taking the abuse of an angry ghost on the chin the same way she suffered the abuse in life. She suffers the psychological bonds of abuse all over again, and yet she’d rather take the abuse than go back to jail by leaving the house. And really, who will believe that her dead hubby is beating the crap out of her (they didn’t the first around, why start now that he’s dead?)
She eventually realizes however that she has to stand up and defend herself, like she did when she killed the guy and goes through all sorts of methods of “ghost removal”. I found this one exceptionally creepy and well done, so if you have the means to see it, do it!

A flick I rented over the weekend, The Burrowers, has a good BTS vibe, though it is set in the Old West.

Let's talk non-fiction for a change. Parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach recommends using Archive.org to track down paranormal books from the late 19th-early 20th century which are now in the public domain. I immediately thought that a digital copy of an actual journal from the American Society for Psychic Research would be a great element in any game with a historical setting like the Last Street in the 1920s or Saint Augustine during the rise of the Court of Tarot. Loyd's letter is here:Link.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami is an anime that would make a good inspiration for BtS 2nd. The main character is a professional in dealing with the supernatural and makes a lot of money doing it. Its an older series but a fun one. The DVD are subtitled only.

I watched a couple of episodes of Poltergeist the Legacy TV SHOW back in the day. I'd have to say it very much could be classified as a BTS Soap Opera.

I can't vouche if the show was any good though.

Cool you can watch them on Hulu

I just bumped into another movie, movies in this case that fit into the BTS mold...Puppetmaster 1 and 2 both feature teams of parnormal researchers.

I actually found a couple Puppetmaster DVD's in the Walmart bargain bin. That's 6 Puppetmaster movies for 10 bucks...not bad, that is if you like schlocky 80's direct to video B-movie horror.

I think they've show up on a similar thread (which is probably why I didn't think to check it here). But I agree, they deserve full mention here as I'm certain that they've influenced a game or two of mine, especially the school scene from way back in the 1st game.

I've had not even heard of it, Shawn. The description from the Wikipedia page makes the show seem like a semi-original blend of Lost and The Blair Witch Project. Do you like the show?

xXxHolic -- This is an older anime series, pronounced simply as 'hol-ic'. It has a real Twighlight Zone vibe to it. Despite the title, it has nothing to do with porn. This is one of my wife's favorite series, so she showed it to me recently. From Clamp (the same manga team which created Card Captor Sakura), this is a very BtS-like show. Set in contemporary Japan, the main character is a high school boy who can not only see and feel spirits around him, but is a magnet attracting them. The other main characters are another boy in the same class who naturally repels spirits and a mysterious shop owner who describers herself as a time-space witch. Although Yuko may be a witch, we hardly ever see her cast magic in any capacity. In BtS terms, she is more of a high level Parapsychologist with maxed-out lore skills and a storeroom of magic items which would make any antiquarian envious. I was surprised the variety of stories that were told in this setup which is basically a sitcom cast. I didn't care for all of the episodes, but there were plenty there which jived for me. I will mention one inparticular in the Ideas-Adventure Starters for BTS thread.

The X TV series by Clamp also has a lot of the supernatural that would be a good fit for BtS. I recommend the TV series over the film as it compresses the story too much.

To the list of TV shows I would add:
Relic Hunter,
Beyond Reality,
Poltergeist: the Legacy...Hulu.com has them
Beyond Belief: fact or fiction?,
Friday the 13th: the series,
Dresdon Files...though the shows are nothing like the books!
She Wolf of London,
and Doctor Who.

If you allow cartoons to be discussed:
Peacock King: Spirit Warrior. Though last I checked they weren't on DVD just VHS.

For the movies:
Hell Boy...CLEARLY!
Ankh, udja, seneb.

Tor, if we ever meet in person, I'm buying you a brewski.

I watched Absentia last night on your recommendation, and HOLY CRAP! This is EXACTLY the kind of material that works in a BTS setting!

I dont say this often, but for those who haven't seen this yet, I'm declaring Abesntia to be "required viewing material". It was on Netflix steaming, but its available cheap (like $7.00) on amazon and I'll probably buy it.

"Absentia" could actually be considered to be the introduction of a BTS adventure, where the survivors of this film come and talk to the Lazlo Society, having nowhere else to turn. Literally, your group could watch the movie, and then start the adventure with a meeting with the police detectives involved.

This is easily one of the best small production movies I've ever seen, and it reinforces my belief that small productions do horror movies best.
