Which monsters are on the covers of 1st and 2nd edition?

Unread post by Axelmania »

BTS1's cover art is by Richard Corben and I can see it says copyright 1986, a year before the 1st printing in 1987

BTS2'd cover art is by John Zeleznek and I can see "03" next to his sig, 2 years prior to the 1st printing in 2005

In both cases I'm drawing a blank on what monsters these are. On some other covers I've seen explanations inside the book of what the cover depicts but if that's anywhere I can't find it.

Anyone have any guesses?

BtS-1 could be a boschala.
BtS-2 doesn't like a monster in either book.

What kind of animal components would you say the boschala would be composed of?

Could the 2e cover maybe be some kind of swampy water/earth elemental?

This came up when we held a round table discussion of the first edition book for the podcast that I was co-hosting with Doublenix. I think it was Mr Loucifer who suggested that the cover model was the randomly generated monster from the GM's section in the back of the book. To my mind, this is almost canon.

As for the second edition cover model, I suspect that is a Tectonic Entity based on the way it seems to be materializing out of a trash heap.

Truth be told, I see them both as random creations chart creatures.

In fact, I had an email chat with Zeleznik (cover artist of BTS-2) a few years back and he confirmed that he was on a short deadline with this cover, so they compromised and he was given free reign on the monster design.

Now I just need to figure out that weird monster in the Summoner OCC in rifts =/

It's always the monsters you don't know about who seem the most interesting sometimes...

there was that colored demon painting in RMB too, had like a helmet and fangs...

BTS1 cover: could be a Dar'ota, page 159, with a wounded eye.

BTS2...no clue.

What I would like to know is what is the monster on page 196 of the first edition?
