Yokai of Japan

Unread post by Shawn Merrow »

This will be coming out in Rifter 71-72 double issue. It was a lot of fun to write and hope you will find it useful.

Beyond the Supernatural™ but also suitable for Rifts®, Ninjas & Superspies/HU2, and other settings – Yokai of Japan by Shawn Merrow and Siembieda – 10 monsters inspired by Japanese myth. Some really fun monsters to spice up any campaign. Art by Mike Mumah. ‘Nuff said.

link for those not familiar with the Yokai folklore/mythology.

they are a fairly diverse class of entities, it will be interesting to see what gets included and how they are handled.

(note that a lot of these appeared in the Hellboy:sword of storms film, but those depictions may not be accurate to the source materials of the myths)

i wonder if Tsukumogami will appear? those could make a fun thing to frustrate investigators with.

These are the ones I wrote for it "Funa-yurei, Hanadaka-tengu, Kappa, Karasu-tengu, Kitsune, Neko-mata, Nue, Nure-onna, Oni, Tanuki." The number is the same, so don't think any changes were made in the list.

How similar is this to the 'Fur of the Yokai' supplement for the BlackTokyo/Fursona D20 games?

I've read the article and I enjoyed it, a lot in fact! I'm planning to use the "Demon Corpses" in an upcoming adventure of mine.
If you haven't gotten this issue yet, this article is worth the cost by itself and I recommend getting it.

Are Kitsune and Garuda considered Yokai?
Ask yourself this;

Same source material but the show is the G rated versions from what little I know of it.

Kitsune yes, and the same with Garuda but under a different name.
