Separating IP

Unread post by Vex403 »

When it comes to keeping the different game lines separate for IP rights, What can be mentioned in a Phase World Submission?

Atlantis?

Stuff from Pantheons of the Megaverse?

What is absolutely off limits in terms of "mixing" the different Palladium games?

You absolutely CAN NOT mix Robotech with anything

Splicers remains questionable (no magic, and the anti-human metal issue will affect space travelers)

Otherwise most are mixable (and via Rifts have been mixed)

If it's from the Rifts setting it might not be too big a deal, although you should probably resist the urge otherwise they'll eventually end up with everything being tied to Phase World.

If it's from Palladium's other original games then it's kinda dubious, especially since Palladium's approach to which modern-day Earth setting is the canon history of Rifts Earth has changed dramatically over the years.

And if it's from something that Palladium's just licensing (eg Robotech, Ninja Turtles), don't.

basically, with a few exceptions (conversion books and similar), your not supposed to directly claim that something came from one of the other lines. so it is OK to say a group of elves came from "a medieval type world with a history of magic" but not "these elves came from a world called 'Palladium'"

basically an extra step of separation in description. vague enough that it could be something totally different if need be, but similar enough to suggest the obvious source.

PB put this policy into place after they started trying to market the Rifts movie rights, and other spin-off products for the IPs. according to Kevin S. when i asked him, it was on the advice of their lawyers to help minimize the overlap between the different IP properties and help keep the owners of one IP from trying to control the content in another that might be sold to a different company. while the IP rights would be sold separately, legal wrangling over whether the crossover elements could be used and who controls them could draw out the process of using those rights.
