I actually was the one who gave Kevin the map and put him in touch with the creator.
I commissioned if for my game, which is in my signature.
Here is a link to the map in my game

I would love one with a bunch of towns, cities, rivers, etc labeled, but this is still super cool.

Yeah, Tad Davis maps are awesome, and I'm obviously a big fan (Many of my own techniques are adaptations of his tutorials). That said, be careful just printing them as they are. Maps that look great on a screen often come out very dark, and maps that look good when printed need a lot more pixels than the image on your screen. If you just blow up the file and print it out in poster size, you'll get a dark and pixelated image.

Getting a map to look right when printed is a discipline in and of itself, one that I'm still working on. While I'm reasonably pleased at how my Bizantium map (p65) came out, there's plenty of room for improvement.

The problem with doing towns, cities, and river labels on a global map is one of scale. If you tried to label all the cities in the Western Empire on the world map, you'd need a huge, poster-sized map at a high definition. Producing that size of an image would involve a lot of work, and doing it in the style of the back cover map also requires a pretty powerful computer and/or a lot of sitting and waiting for the machine to implement a tool.

The other problem is the source material. Many of the published maps conflict on the placement and shape of geographic features, such as forests, rivers, lakes, and islands, as well as the coastline of the main continent. Also, many features and locations are mentioned in the text, but not plotted on any maps. Just researching and putting together the key features of such a map is a project in and of itself.

Good news on that front, though: I'm working on it. See the vector map project thread in the Fantasy forums.

In short, what you want is not impossible, but it would be a pretty major project.

Normal size on the computer screen is a lot larger than what you could print it and still have it look good. High-def screens are generally at 100 pixels per inch. To make a printed image look good, you need somewhere around 300 dots per inch. Since images are 2-dimensional, look at the 100% zoom image on the screen. The printed version should be about 1/9 that size (in terms of area). You can print it out at a lower resolution/larger size, but it will look pixelated up close.

If this goes forward, I'm sure Tad will make it look even more spectacular than the back of Bizantium; his technique just keeps getting better. I'd love to see a world map poster for Palladium Fantasy. Better still would be an atlas with regional details.

I have to admit I'm thinking about commissioning him to do a map for my Shores of the Dead series.

Say now, that is a good idea. Kinda like what Kenzer did with Kalamar Atlas would be awesome.

The idea has come up before. the Rifts GMG map section mentions that they've contemplated it.
