From the latest weekly update - new game system?

Unread post by sHaka »

From this week's update

"We’re developing new products, new ideas and maybe even a new game system for release over the next year or two."

Do you think "game line" was meant, or that they're actually looking to bring out something completely new, like an updated or completely different game mechanic?

I hope it isn't a new line. They can't support the ones they have now properly outside of Rifts....

In the Roleplay Roullette interview video from another thread, Kevin teases the possibility of a PF Ultimate Edition, maybe something like that? If the rules for RRT are so great maybe they'll expand that to other things like Rifts or HU mini rules? (That second one is just conjecture or perhaps wishful thinking on my part).

I asked my wife to guess the name of my friend's old BSN character, which was a Pearl Jam reference.
"Oh, something like Jeremy Black?" she says without hesitation.
"Nope... but I like that character name better!"

Depending on what NMI was let in on.......I have given Kevin my input on it and said yes.
And yes not letting people know is a pain. But when I was told......I was like "YES!!!" And Kevin was looking like a kid in a candy shop.

Yeah. So, we get the Killer Cyborg to hold NMI down (after all, he's a cyborg), then we give him atomic wegies and noogies until he spills the beans? Or....withhold his bacon rations. Harsh, I know, but ends suits the means. Or, something like that.

Well that'd be nice. I think we'd see plenty of new information for our favorite neglected game lines.

While I did see the video where KS talked about exciting new game lines, I think what we're being subjected to here, in this thread by those "in the know", is a trolling of epic proportions.

Assuming that they actually meant a new system...
-I think we can safely rule out a megaversal rules system 2.0. Even if they had the inclination, they haven't had the time.
-They've expressed enough disinterest in the D&D OGL in the past that I doubt that they'd go for that now.
-It's possible that they've found some other company interested in converting Rifts into another system. Like "GURPS Rifts" or something. (probably not GURPS, though)
-It's possible that Palladium is picking up some small-time game with a different system, and publishing it. IIRC, something like that is how they got the original Recon.
-It's possible that they're trying for some non-rpg kind of game, like a CCG or something, and that's what they mean. Although I doubt that they'd go for CCGs again, and it'd seem odd to use the term "system" for that.

OR it's possible that they've been picking at something that they mentioned a while back, a rules-light, beginner version of Rifts for younger players called "Boomers."
That's the kind of thing that they might have had the time to do.
It'd arguably be a new "system."
It wouldn't have to involve other companies, so they wouldn't end up in a Manhunters situation, or a N-Gage situation, or a situation like they did with the CCG, or any of the other stuff that may have made Palladium a bit wary of working with other companies.
This one seems to be the simplest explanation that fits the facts, so that's what I'm going to wager my $0 on.

I recall a conversation I had with Kevin a few years back at Origins.
During which he asked me a question I thought odd at the time...
He mentioned the possibility of an entirely new line of game and wanted to know if I would be interested in a new system unrelated to the current one.
I did not think much of the question at the time (I get the impression he steered every conversation that day towards that question) but now...

With whatever they decide to do. I hope they hire an Editor that can go over the book with a fine tooth comb, and call out the inconsistencies and correct issues. Make the new game internally consistent and play test the rules prior to publishing it (even if it means a pre-released published or pdf version). When they go about releasing it - I hope they actually release a PDF Copy as well, because you know the fans have been asking for it.

And in doing so - Actually use their fanbase ie Megaversal Ambassadors to promote and demo the game line with actual material from the game line via swag. And maybe use that fanbase to also help edit the final release as well.

But - I could be dreaming of a utopian like future... you know where Sarah and Hillary are on a sitcom remake of the Odd Couple.

They tried something "like" this with Myrimiddon Press with "Manhunter".

I vaguely recall someone from Palladium once mentioning a desire to make a Palladium RPG that was inspired by Robotech but wasn't actually Robotech. Am I remembering some sort of crazy fever dream? Could this be related to that?

I highly doubt Palladium would update their existing IPs over to the new system because that would invalidate tons of splatbooks. I see two ways of intrepreting this:

1. Our definition of a new system is not the same as Palladium and we may just get another incremental update (such as was the case with the making of RIFTS Ultimate).

2. It is a completely new system in which it will most likely be tied to a new IP.

I'd hope that some energy be channeled to BTS, Mechanoids, Fantasy, Heroes and all the other promised and long neglected lines.

I would rather see that or just discontinue them, if a new game line has more momentum.

That was Wayne Breaux wanting to make a Mecha setting RPG.

He also wanted to expand the Attorian Empire (and Aliens Unlimmited of HU2); sadly neither project went past the "Comming soon to Pbooks" promo stage before he hung up his RPG-writing hat.

Bummer. PB expanding their scope into Imprints for small publishers would be interesting.

They tried something "like" this with Myrimiddon Press with "Manhunter".

Yeah, I loved it! Others didn't. Anyway...I don't see a problem with telling us the genra. Steam punk, mecha tech, fantasy, sci-fi, etc?

That sounds like what I was remembering. Thanks.

Maybe, the system isnt a new game rule system, or a ip maybe it is bringing it to a new system?

A program to play pen and paper MMO through multimedia devices such as phones, tablets, computers? enabling old IP to be used and creating a nice little D-Bee CashCow
