I'm really impressed with the pawns. I got to use them at a convention game last month, and they really added to the experience. Miniatures don't work for all games or gamers, but if you don't play by theatre of the mind, then these are pretty solid.

Likewise, I assumed it had been cast on the ground. I would need to reread the spell description, but I would be disinclined to allow it to be cast on the surface of a person or creature. I'm in the flypaper camp.

Or, you could privately ask him if something has happened recently that might be causing him problems. A recent behavior change might be a sign that there are emotional issues that are completely unrelated. But he might be lashing out in your games.
